My Wife The Photographer
I am so proud of my wife Tanya. From a hobby that started just two and a half years ago she has now built up quite a busy business. Just after our second son, Rhys, was born she bought herself a Nikon D40 SLR camera. She had always wanted to take up photography and so took the plunge in the spring of 2008. It was obvious from the very start that she had a natural aptitude for photography, I mean she even read the manual that came with the camera to see how it actually worked. I still haven't worked out how to use the camera on my iPhone properly yet! She started by taking pictures of our boys and it was becoming increasingly obvious that she also has a natural eye for a great picture and she started experimenting with different lighting techniques and grew to know her camera inside out and exactly what it would do. That was when Tanya started thinking about maybe earning a living at photography. She had to give up her job in the bank after Rhys was born as the childcare costs would have been more than she would have earned per month so working from home in her own business seemed the answer as she could work around my time off from work. A friend of mine was a hobbyist photographer but also doing a few weddings for friends and he invited Tanya along to act as a second photographer to gain some experience. She loved it. Tanya's always been a people person so she manages to warm to the wedding parties straight away and get them to relax in her presence. Starting out in photography is not a cheap venture and I must admit that our credit card has taken quite a hit recently. There is the lighting equipment she needs for portrait work, also she has upgraded her camera and also carries a second as back up. Tanya is a Nikon fan and uses a D300s as her main with a D90 as her back up. This allows her peace of mind incase one should break on someone's big day and also allows her to have two different lenses so she can quickly capture a moment that she might otherwise have missed by changing lenses. She also has an array of lenses including a prime and a wide angle lens. As I said, she is doing really well and is averaging one wedding per month and also doing portraits which she actually does from our own front room as we cannot afford premises at the moment. I think Tanya has a very bright future in her business and I look forward to retiring on her earnings and becoming a house husband, I think I would like that.
