Mezzanine - A Perfect Django CMS

Last couples of month I have spend discovering Django. After spending some time found a need for some kind of system which can handle simple content management and blog ability to write.

After Googling lend up at Django-CMS to use it. After some time I found it difficult to configurate and implement theme on it. Although it took a while to get my head around and set up everything please bear mind that I am very much newbie in django.

Meanwhile I been to plone conference and had opportunity to atttend django sprint and Nate Aane had suggested me to have a look on Mezzanine for django cms which is an open source content management platform built using the Django framework. After coming back spend almost one week I found what I was looking for. It just took less then five minutes to set up everything. The thing I like most about it is that it got live demo. which helped me a lot to try it before deployed it.

Mezzanine very well documented and clearly mentioned what needs to do to deploy production environment. it took me a week to deploy centrel wembly mosque site with a full time job. At the moment this is very basic application platform although nothing is stopping anyone to developed it further. I can see it has great potential to become fully fledge CMS.

First release of Mezzanine was at June 2010 and after that till the date (25th Nov 2010) there has been around 35 releases which clearly shows that it is very well supported and implemented. This project has not huge community at the moment as we see other open source projects although it increasing very rapidly.

What I can say is just spend couple of hours on demo before choosing any CMS for django. you will really appreciates what Mezzanine can offers to your django site. In conclusion, This is perfect django CMS for me. [http://www.webbyfox.co.uk]Web design London

How to Become World Class Developer

Every developer dreams of reaching a world class rank. But reaching this rank is not given to everyone unless he/she is working in a big company, and on a big project. Working on small projects limits the horizons of the thoughts and hides much of the big projects complexities and approaches to the solutions.

While books are necessary to learn, they stop short of giving real experience. Books are good for getting started, learning the methodology, the object model and the APIs. No doubt this is a necessary package however it is necessary but not sufficient. No book is able to explain the details of a project and the pros and cons of every technical decision made in the course of the development.

The picture looks somehow dim for those who are not lucky enough to work in giant companies and produce softwares that are used by millions of people.

This is not completely true. There is a way of becoming top notch developer even while working on small projects. The solution exists but it is not free! It costs time and efforts. It is only for people who are passionate about developing.

The large majority of commercial softwares have their code hidden and restricted to the teams that are working on them. But there are also very important open source projects that are accessible to everyone and are used all around the world. These softwares are written by highly skilled engineers either part of their daytime job or on their free time. In both ways, these projects are "gold mines" for developers who are aiming to acquire new skills.

So the solution is to find the right open source project, one that is interesting to the person wanting to learn. Then, try to build the project and start learning the code. At first it looks like a daunting task. It might fail few times, but success comes with persistency and perseverance.

Every open source project has forums and discussion groups, but almost all of them lack complete and clean documentation. So a good approach would be to grasp the overall architecture of the project and all the available documentation that goes around. Then start looking in the code for the following points: - Coding style: it is important to understand how the lines of codes are written because it helps improve readability. - Tips and tricks: every module or sub module of the project brings a solution to a problem. Some are straight forward; others are trickier and utilize an indirect approach. It is crucial to learn these tricks in order to use them when facing similar problems. - Global architecture: while tips and tricks are used on a granular level, the global architecture gives the big picture and discusses the decisions made to solve key problems. It is worth mentioning that there is no single ideal solution, but a solution that fits certain priorities established by the project authors.

After understanding the code or at least part of it, it is important to get involved with the community that is working directly or indirectly on this project. For this reason it is imperative to visit the project forums on regular basis and actively contribute to the discussions. This will increase the understanding of the project and the reasons why some decisions are being taken.

Another major point is to discover bugs and propose solution for them. Many open source projects have policies to allow people to contribute to the project that has a mandatory path that goes through discovering and solving bugs. Once a certain number of bugs and fixes are reached, the person is allowed to become a committer which means contributing to the development of the project. When such a stage is reached, congratulations! You are now a world class developer.

Today's Content Management Systems

Originally, what is now described as a Content Management System or CMS was typically custom developed by internal programmers or external contractors, and often had limited features and functions. In some cases, web development firms built their own systems and used the technology behind multiple web sites. Over time, some of these grew with new features like social networking, interactivity and highly graphic web 2.0 features.

Some became better technically typically when they embraced the disciplines of software development such as product roadmaps, quality development methodologies, secure technologies, and better testing and quality assurance procedures. This enabled them to scale to be a suitable solution as a web site has become central to the communications plans of the organisation whether business, government or not-for-profit.

Mature products: Some of these systems have grown into mature licensed software products with all the latest features in a technically sophisticated package, backed by highly professional and reputable support organisations. Some of the international content management systems (often US-based) are extremely expensive to license, implement and manage, and are typically used by the largest organisations. Others are more within the reach of the small to medium sized organisation, yet have the quality, features, flexibility and scalability needed.

Open source: There are also a number of quite good open source products developed which have all of the advantages and limitations of open source development. While there might be no licence fees, they still require extensive technical services for installation and set up, training your staff to use them, customisation and ongoing support.

The slow lane: Still other products have not been able to move with the times, given the significant costs of developing and testing new features in the face of the quality of the competition. Sometimes they have been developed in what was once good technology but which is now no longer supported or offering the features of new technology. This can mean that an organisation's web site is stuck in a system that no longer meets today's needs, and which is no longer being developed by the provider.

If that's your situation, maybe it's time to move on.

Multibase is a business IT services and solutions company, with a long and successful track record in delivering technology that increases productivity, reduces cost and improves service quality. Review: KompoZer--A Capable Web Editor for Mac

KompoZer is an open-source program based on the old Netscape Composer. Open-Source means the programming work is done by volunteers and it's totally free (although donations are accepted).

You might see some references on Mac websites to an HTML editor called NVU (pronounced N-view). You might even see some references to an editor called Sea Monkey. These are all based on the Composer component of the Mozilla Application Suite and Gecko 1.7 (and they all have a Mac version).

What's the difference between them? KompoZer is the most actively updated and most bug free. I have tried all three, and while the interface of the three programs is very similar, KompoZer works best in my experience. (In fact, Nvu has now been discontinued.)

The situation around KompoZer is something like that of NeoOffice, which is an updated version of OpenOffice (recently renamed LibreOffice). OpenOffice came first, and NeoOffice was spun off of it by other volunteers. Unlike NeoOffice however, which is exclusively for the Mac, KompoZer is cross-platform and runs on both Macs and PCs.

If all this seems confusing, that's because it is! All you have to remember, however, is that for open-source office applications for the Mac, NeoOffice is the way you want to go, and for open-source HTML editors for the Mac, the best choice is definitely KompoZer.

KompoZer is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML editor, which means that you create your page in a word processor-like interface, and the HTML coding is done automatically in the background by the software. You can view and edit the HTML code if, for example, you need to add Google Analytics code or another piece of code that adds extra features to your website, by clicking on the HTML Tags tab at the bottom of the KompoZer window.

KompoZer is remarkably capable (but not perfect) at reading HTML and interpreting it correctly. You can open virtually any webpage you may find in KompoZer and it will look pretty much the same as it does in your web browser.

In fact, KompoZer even has an "Open Web Location" command under the File menu that allows you to type in the URL of a web page, and the program will download and open it in its own window, ready for editing. This means that you can work with sophisticated templates you find online with no problem.

The feature is good but not perfect. For example, open Apple's homepage in KompoZer and it will look fairly good in preview mode but the formatting will get messed up when you switch to editing mode. On the other hand, KompoZer is standards compliant and doesn't add strange tags to the HTML it creates, unlike older HTML editors you may be familiar with if you've been around webpage creation for a while.

Just because you can open a complex template, however, does not mean that you will be able to edit it to your liking. A novice may find it impossible to figure out how to add and remove columns, sidebars or other elements without destroying the overall formatting of the page. If you want to start your website from a template, you would be well advised to test it thoroughly first to make sure you can make the changes to it over time that you will need to.

The KompoZer interface is somewhat Windows-like but not overly unintuitive. I found the online support for the software to be generally good. There is an active message boards staffed by passionate volunteers available for you to get your questions answered.

KompoZer can open multiple tabs at the same time, so you can work on different webpages (for example, to copy and paste elements from one page to another) without having a gaggle of separate windows open and cluttering your screen. It has unlimited undos, the ability to add tables and forms, and boasts support for cascading style sheets (CSS).

CSS is a standard that allows web designers to set various style elements such as fonts, colors, indentation and other formatting without having to add individual HTML tags. Similar to the style sheets in your word processor, you could set a heading to be boldfaced and a certain size and then you can apply this formatting to all relevant parts of your webpage for consistent results. If you change your mind about the characteristics of the style, you could edit the style sheet, and all instances of that style that you have defined on your webpage will be changed accordingly.

Although KompoZer is definitely an improvement on NVU and SeaMonkey, in addition to the problems opening some webpages, a fair number of bugs still mar the interface. For example, the amount of space it adds between lines on the page is often inconsistent and can require quite a bit of struggling to get the page to look like what is wanted. After closing all windows, it sometimes refuses to open another, unless you quit and relaunch the program. Sometimes applying a headline style to selected text does nothing, and sometimes some keyboard commands stop working until a relaunch.

KompoZer also lacks features such as the ability to create image maps, and the software doesn't give you much help in selecting fonts which are cross-platform, or available on most computers. However, you can't beat the price, and if you want an HTML editor that allows you to easily inspect and edit the underlying code for the greatest flexibility, KompoZer is your best free choice.

KompoZer also has a site management feature, but don't let the name fool you. This is just a built-in FTP program. If you're looking for a feature like the one found in Adobe Dreamweaver that allows you to change your site's organization and move pages around between various folders on your Mac without breaking any of the internal links (often useful for working with templates), you won't find it here.

And as far as FTP goes, I prefer to pay a little extra money and just use the commercial program Transmit, one of the best FTP programs available for the Mac (Panic software - $34). Transmit features an intuitive two-panel window that makes it easy for you to upload your website and perform other FTP operations. On the left side of the interface is a panel that works much like a Mac Finder window, and on the left side is a panel that represents your FTP space. Uploading or synchronizing your site is a simple drag-and-drop operation from the Mac side of the interface to the FTP side, or by clicking the Sync button. A bookmarks feature lets you store the login details for all of your websites, so that the login process is as easy as clicking a button.

You might get the impression that the Mac is the forgotten stepchild of the Internet marketing industry. But did you know that some of the top names in Internet Marketing use Macs? How Open Source is Poised to Impact the Future

Many Governments, Institutions and organizations are warming up to open source concept. Even though large software vendors still control their niches e.g. Microsoft still controls vast majority of operating systems market through its windows operating system, that number is starting to tilt in favor of other operating system including Linux; an open-source operating system.

One of the main drivers of open source is cost, it is much cheaper to run an open-source operating system than it is to obtain commercial operating systems like windows.

The success of open source has been attributed to satisfaction and commitment of programmers. Many organizations which use open source also contribute back. Open-source is preferred to commercial software because unlike commercial software where vendors lock you in or impose restriction on you depending on the kind of license you have, not to mention lengthy legal restrictions, most open source are cheaper and easier to upgrade

Examples of opensource projects which are mature for enterprise architectures at the moment are; operating systems (such as Linux), Databases (such as Mysql) and application servers. However it is argued that open-source is still not mature for higher level of enterprise, this can be attributed to community knowledge base which sometimes can be disjointed leading to lack of proper documentation. In addition, since open source depend on programmers donating their time, it is not as lucrative as commercial software and therefore does not always attract the best minds.

Even Microsoft which had been slow to embrace open source has been accommodating. In 2009, they were the founding sponsors of CodePlex Foundation. Codeplex foundation in turn have developed an ASP.NET OpenSource Gallery to support Microsoft products. Ruby On Rail have recently developed iron-ruby; a platform for.net. This is seen by many industry experts as a bridge between Ruby world and.net world

Today opensource operating systems are found in high places such as US department of defense, US Royal Navy, French Parliament, Bank of China, even 1 laptop per child has been built on open source operating system; Linux.

In 2006, IBM ran an advert that said, they support linux 100%. Conoco Phillips, is a machine capable of performing 500 billions calculations per second, and which uses open source Linux to power a massive cluster of servers, used to search the earth for untapped oil under earth.

Amazon uses Linux in every inch of their business, New york Stocks Exchange run on red hat enterprise Linux. Miniature laptops called net-books are today shipped with Linux like never before

How Open Source Can Help You Start an Online Business on a Shoe String

Open source can be defined as: The practice of development, in may cases, of computer software where the source files or codes are made freely available to the public. Open Source presents a framework that in many cases have been tried and tested. Hundreds or sometimes thousands of programmers work to create one solution.

Examples of popular and widely supported Open Sources for Internet businesses include; Joomla and Drupal for web development, OS commerce, Magento, zen cart etc for shopping carts

1.Support
When your system is built through Open Source, you have thousands and sometimes millions of other users using a similar product, if you run into problems, all you need to do is post a question and within hours and sometimes even minutes, someone with a similar problem or who has encountered a similar problem before will be able to provide a solution for you

2.Choice
Using Open Source presents you with wide choices. Because there are many developers who have access to the codes, you can easily get another developer to customize your project should the first one fail. When your system is developed from scratch, you are at the mercy of that particular developer, if you were to transfer that code to a second programmer, not only will the second programmer have a steep learning curve, if the system was not built and documented in accordance with a standard methodology/development procedure, then the second programmer might find it absolutely impossible to build upon it

3.Security
Contrary to many claims that open source are not secure, open source are secure and this is why; when you use an open source, thousand other developers take time to test the code. If vulnerability is discovered, a post is made in the discussion forum or an email is sent to subscribers

4.Community
Using open source involve sharing, if one person encounters difficulty e.g. if their website is hacked, they will be able to share it in the forum and thousand other people will instantly become aware and take the necessary steps

5.Complexity
Regardless of good your programmers are, there are less chances they would compete with complexity of some of the open source available especially on a shoe string budget. The reason being, some of the open sources have been developed over years and the teams of experts keep revising it and developing it. It is no surprise to find an open source which is up to 10 years old.

How to Understand Open Source Licenses

With over 80 licenses approved by Open Source Institute, it is almost daunting to imagine how organization can keep track of licenses of the codes they are using. To make the matters worse, vendors are not limited to these standard licenses, if they have codes which they would like to make available as an open source, they are free to pick standard licenses and make a variation of them.

GPL and GPL version 2 has been the most commonly used public license. General public licenses are designed to allow users to have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (they can charge for them, if they wish), users can receive source code, users have freedom to change software or use pieces of it for new programs.

Users who distribute these open source software are expected to transfer the same freedom to their recipients, and to show their recipients the terms of the license in order to let them know their rights. Users who distribute open source software must ensure others can receive source code as well.

GPL clearly states that it does not offer any warranty. This is done to protect the author and developers. Any modified version of the software must be clearly stated as modified in order to protect the author of the previous version.

GPL version 3 was introduced in 2007 to address some of the unforeseen issues which could not be protected by GPL version 1 or 2 and as explained by DR. Richard Stallman; the founder of GNU Project, these were not things he could see in the 1989, when he wrote the first GPL. Some of the issues that GPL faced included:

Tivoization; this occur when manufactures of GPLed software devices rig their software such that, only they can change it but not the owner. When a device thwarts the owners effort to make changes, it is known as Trivoization.

Discriminatory patent deals; such as the case of Microsoft where Microsoft was telling people that were running free software that they would not sue them for patent infringement as long as the vendors were paying Microsoft for that privilege, this is seen as not in accordance with freedom of open source.

Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the European Union Copyright acts make it a criminal to write or share software which can break Digital Restrictions Mismanagement of DVD and other media.

License with Copy left attribute are tricky because they require the users to pass their modified code as open source, this might not be in line with their business model. A famous example is that of Microsoft where one of their developers picked a code off source code from a GPL software to build an application, this was bundled in windows 7, someone detected it and Microsoft had to halt the launch of Windows 7 whilst they tried to figure what to do with it, eventually they decided to release that particular application as open source.

There is dual licensing where a vendor can release product under two licenses; one GPL and second one could be restrictive in order to develop an income stream examples are Red Hat which has Enterprise version and MYSQL.

How Entrepreneurs Can Utilize Open Source For Their Online Business

In the previous articles; small budget, big profit, I explained some of the consequences of a choosing a developer based on price a lone, using my friend who wanted to build an Internet Marketing Online business as a case study.

In this article, I will reveal to you the secrets, I revealed to my friend. If you are a medium or small business, an individual or an entrepreneur who would like to to start an online marketing business, this is definitely for you.

I told my friend that if he wanted to start an online marketing business, he needed to understand internet security and the implications, data protection policy and its legal implications as well as future maintenance of the system.

I told my friend that if he was interested in starting an online business on a shoe string then he needed to carefully think about what options he had been given by the developers and then gain knowledge and understanding of the open source movement

As a small business, you most likely do not have hundreds of thousands of pounds required to develop a decent online business system. If you go a head and build a poor quality system, you will most likely lose your money, not only will you be dry financially by the time the system is completed, you will most likely not have money for marketing.

No marketing, no money, period! Regardless of how good your system is, if you do not have a sound marketing strategy, you will not be very happy with your result, and someone is probably reading this article who has failed to make a dime online, let me encourage, it is not like there is no money to be made online, revisit your marketing strategy in case you have a good system. If you do not have a good system, you might want to visit both; your marketing strategy and your system. The two of them must blend and you have to think about them while designing the system and not an after thought

As a small business, I gave my friend 10 reasons why I thought open source was the only solution which seemed viable, based on his budget

Catch me in my next article as I give you the 10 reasons I gave my friend...

5 Reasons Why Entrepreneurs Should Embrace Open Source

I am not an open source champion, however based on experience, I could say the following are good reasons why an entrepreneur should consider opensource as a solution for their internet business models.

Ease of Implementation
Most open source have been made very easy to use. Several web hosting companies now have specialist software that automatically install opensource software for you online, which means you can be up and running in hours or in some cases minutes, as opposed to bespoke system which has to go through a traditional software life cycle. Even a novice can install these open source, grab hold of training manuals and be off

Costs
One of the big advantages of open source is costs, because open source have most features already inbuilt, which would in normal case take months and cost a lot, customization is what is required in an open source which could take only a few hours. You will end up paying a developer a small fraction of cost it would have taken you to build the whole system from scratch

Resources
Because opensource are cheaper to design and implement, it means your resources can be concentrated on the places where they are needed the most. Many entrepreneurs spend every dime and nickel on development cost forgetting that they need marketing.

By the time their system is built, they literally have no strength and no money left. Many developers are so concerned about features and technicalities of the system, they never give thought to the softer side of the system such as marketing and usability. Many entrepreneurs, fail to realize that a complete system is just the beginning, there is still marketing, training, security and sales to complete.

Tested
Most open sources systems have been tested and tried. Rather than try something new, which you might not be sure about, it is advisable to use a working system

Unique Selling Point
Contrary to the believe that opensource do not have a unique selling point, you could have a developer built a module or an extension with your own uniqueness thereby having the best of both world e.g. your unique selling point and a tried system with community support
