Online directories are one of the hottest new ways to make money online, but before you dive in, take a little time to plan your attack. A bit of strategic planning now will save you headaches, time and money later on.

To launch a new online directory from scratch, you'll need to address five things:


Content and Features: Decide on your 'topic', plan your data needs and define any capabilities you'll need.

Planning For the Unexpected - Emergencies With Online Businesses and Blogs

Things happen. That's just the way life is. Family emergencies, home emergencies, emergency evacuations. Things happen unplanned and throw things into turmoil. But how much chaos happens to your website ensues depends on your planning.

With blogs and website you do not have to have everything published right away. With WordPress and other blogs you can easily write several posts and leave them in draft mode. As long as they are in draft mode they will not publish, but you can have the posts ready for an emergency. With the posts written and prepared it does not take long to make them work for you.

How can you plan for the unexpected?

Some emergencies do happen completely unplanned. Right now, I am planning for my grandmother's passing. Unfortunately this means at least a week away from my blogs. So I am writing many posts to cover my planned absence with extra in case things change and writing posts to keep current. The posts I am putting in reserve are not time related so it will be okay when they publish.

You could also write posts that will be basically timeless so when they get used will not matter.

When your expected or unexpected emergency happens you can feel confident knowing you have posts and information ready to go. Rather than trying to rush out an update, you can make some minor changes to a post to update your readers. You can then go through your drafts and schedule them for your standard post interval, be that a post every few days or once a week.

How do I schedule updates and posts?

Fortunately with WordPress blogs you can schedule posts. Instead of selecting publish go a little to the left and change the date and time. Then select publish, it will change to scheduled so the posts will automatically go. While you can not set up "weekly" you can look at the calendar to set it up for the next date. If all your posts are already written there is no need to go back into them, just click posts, edit posts, and under the post title use quick edit to change the date. This will allow you to change the date on a posts in a few minutes and set up several posts to go on your regular schedule.
