Yes, you can make R5,000-R6,000 a week from home. PR is the art of getting free exposure through newspaper articles, radio shows and TV programmes. Swanky agencies charge thousands for doing what you can do cheaper, better and more profitably from home.

1. Every company needs PR but medium-sized businesses are your best clients. Target clients in your immediate area. It's easy to get free exposure for local companies from your local newspapers, for instance. They're crying out for good stories to fill their pages.

2. Agree to a new PR story with your client every Monday morning. The best stories include:

A new product or new lower price.
A big deal that's just been signed.
Charity donation.
Your client's take on an important local or national story.
"How to" information leading to a recommendation for your client's services.

3. Now write that story up into a press release.

Use the firm's stationery.
Write "News Release" in capitals across the centre of the top of the page.

Don't over "rave" about the company you're representing. Good publicity is inferred rather than stated.

Write in the style of the publication you're targeting.
Ensure the company you're working for approves every press release before you send it. It's embarrassing and unprofessional to have to withdraw a press release before the publication you sent it to goes to print.

4. Mail, fax or email newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations that match the target market of the company. Wednesday and Thursday are good days. Journalists are often desperate for space fillers at the end of the week.

5. Develop a relationship with the editor of your target publications. Issues are usually planned three months ahead. So ask for their features list and see if you can contribute a "space filler" that will suit these articles. But don't expect every article you submit to be published. If an editor doesn't like your piece, ask for some feedback so you can submit a better article next time. But don't harass the editor!

6. Bill your client. A short paragraph or 20 seconds of airtime can literally be worth R5,000-R50,000 free advertising to your client. So, even as a newcomer, you should charge R1,000-R1,300 for writing one press release. Build a base of five regular clients and you'll earn R5,000-R6,500 each week from part-time home PR. (It's also a good idea to charge per article to start with and then move onto a monthly retainer fee thereafter.)

7. Keep a clippings file of all published press releases to build your own personal portfolio. And don't forget to send your client a copy too.

10 Things Every DIY PR Person Should Have on Their to-Do List in January 2011

Hands up who's hanging out for a holiday after a busy year?

I hear you.

While it certainly is nice to indulge in some quiet down-time and ease your way back to work at the start of the year, putting in a few hours to plan your PR and pitch a few targeted story ideas could pay off and give your business a real kick-start to 2011.

And because another to-do list is the last thing you might want to be doing as you wrap up business for the year, I thought!'d do it for you and include a few tips along the way:)

10 things every DIY PR person should have on their to-do list in January 2011:

1. Plan your PR calendar. Think about major events and public holidays that you might be able to leverage for some publicity. For example, Australia Day - if you're pitching a photo opportunity for Australia Day, make it bright and big (or small...especially when you include young babies). Include Valentines Day, Mothers/Fathers Day, as well as the seasons and back to school times if they are relevant to you.
2. Write up a media wish list - list the names of the journalists and media outlets you would like to appear in and the kind of stories you would like to be involved in - think big. Then research your target publications. Get to know their story style and sections and make yourself a cheat-sheet.
3. Follow your favourite journalists on twitter, you'll be amazed at what you find out about what they are looking for, what they like and so on.

8. Make plans to brush up on your PR skills. If you are outsourcing - does your agency measure up? Or, if you are a DIY publicist, do you need a helping hand. You may think about taking a course or joining a mentor program - it's amazing what you can learn in a short amount of time to make a big difference to your PR results
9. Start planning your campaigns. If you're planning to launch new services or a product in 2011, brainstorm some PR ideas. Even if you jot down some dot points about timing, who you might involve or where you might hold a launch event and the type of media you will target. If its magazines you're after, it might be time to get your media release ready sooner than you think!
10. Update your media contact list and annotate it with any information about the journalists you have spoken to, what they like, what they are looking for and so on.


And if you are planning to pitch story ideas over the festive season in Australia...get in early! Even though many TV and radio shows won't start back on air until the third week in January, producers are coming back on deck to plan the segments early. Some will be working from the 5th of January while others will be coming back from the 17th.

Make the most of this the quieter time of year by offering a story idea that's light-hearted and a feel-good for the summer months. Journalists are much more receptive during this non-rating summer period.

LinkedIn Polling: Lessons Learnt

The LinkedIn Polls application is a great tool I tested recently as an experiment for our new client Foresite, a fantastic digital agency.
How does it work?

� Log onto your LinkedIn account as normal
� Select the 'More' option (on the left of the search function), which will highlight a drop down menu
� Click 'Polls'
� Select the 'Create a Poll' button
� Work your way through the instructions

What's its purpose?

This requires a bit of pro-active thinking as the options are pretty extensive. Here's a quick overview though:

�To create an interesting news angle backed up by an illuminating statistic
�To find out more about a new market for a new product or service launch
�To appreciate a particular trend

What edge do LinkedIn polls have on commissioned research?
�It's cost effective - it cost me $1.50 per answer, plus I was able to specify the number of answers I wanted returned - so in total, I spent $150 on a concrete survey question (in comparison, it cost approximately �200 for a simple yes/ no response from the same number with YouGove, Vanson Bourne and Omniboss, so clearly a cheaper option).
�It offers targeted demographics, which can be specified geographically, by industry, profession and even job title. For example, UK technology based marketing directors and business owners.
�This did actually deliver responses, I had over 100 answers in 4 days - how I don't know, another reason I'm annoyed that I didn't think of LinkedIn in the first place!. The ease of setting the parameters, then sitting back and waiting for the results to come in is a much brighter prospect than approaching people on the street.
�The data is categorised and analysed by the polling function, saving the manual trawl through Excel this normally requires
�Results can then easily be grouped by age, gender, position, and company size.

The downside

�The way the function is presented visually is a little puzzling - you might also find it difficult to survey those outside of your own network or the US of A - you are able to go outside of this, but it's not obvious by any means
�It took a few attempts to be able to categorise and break down the responses, but I go there eventually.

Do-Follow Or No-Follow - What Are They?

What are Do-Follow or No-Follow? As soon as you start learning the ropes of website or blog marketing, you will defiantly hear the term Do-Follow or No-Follow.

No-Follow

Due to the increasing spam comments left by lazy internet marketer, many blogs and websites owners made their sites no-follow. What this means is that when a commenter puts their website URL in a comment, the search engines will not spider or crawl that URL from the no-follow site. Many of the people that spam comment sections often have low page rank (PR) sites. A website that has a lot of low PR sites linking to it will get penalized by the search engines because the site is giving no real value to the readers.

No-follow benefits site owners because they do not have the worry of losing their personal PR rank. Although this does deter spammers from commenting on your site, it also discourages other honest people from commenting and helping your PR rank.

Placing random comments on a no-follow site does not gain you anything. At most you will get some traffic from people who see your comment, but they will not be the targeted traffic. The search engines will not recognize your link from the no-follow site as well.

Do-Follow

Do-follow sites in the other hand benefit everybody when the commenters make relevant comments to posts. It helps visiting website owners, because they can leave comments on a do-follow site and when the search engines crawl that site they crawl the visitors URL as well. For do-follow site owners, the benefits include having more commenters often with higher PR sites than your own and also creates more links to your site.

These sites may require a little more work for the site owner to keep spam comments off. Not a lot of bloggers get comments but almost everyone get spam. Most website and blog platforms have plug-ins available to assist in filtering out the majority of spam. When done correctly a do-follow site owner can see their site move up in the rankings quickly, especially if they have good content that inspires other high PR site to comment and link to your site.

There is no hard and fast rule about which is better. However, for sites that are starting out or have a PR2 or less, making the site a do-follow site has many advantages. There are a few do-follow lists that will help you bring in more quality commenters.
