Selling The Sizzle Part One - Working At Home From Odesk And Beyond

Introduction: Unlike most of what you'll find or read on the internet- being, more or less, wrote for you to purchase by someone simply looking to make a buck off you- this is a true-life success story of how I went from working in a saw-mill, having arrogantly and foolishly skipped out on finishing college, to Post Hurricane Louisiana, to making a living working from my home office!

Included is follow-up advice on how to master the online job market, develop your own work-at-home-business- be it eBay, Party-lite or freelance work; and an entire section of advice titled "Success on Odesk: Selling Yourself".

You many wonder how I learned so much? To start with, a family member got my involved in my first work at home job, and from there many family members including my wife have followed step through my advice! You see... working at home is rather contagious. And once you get the bug, you have it for life! After all who doesn't want to be their own boss, set their own hours, make money in their underwear as an informational I once seen advertised? Well I didn't believe it at the time, at least that method, but today through hard word, time, devotion, and skill-building, I can tell you honestly- one working individual to another- you can do it. You have all the skills needed.

Getting started:

For years after high-school I'd worked mundane jobs. Several in a saw mill busting my back day in and day out 'heading off' the main saw. The drive was always there to master whatever I done. Did it matter it was a saw-mill? No. It mattered it was what I done for a living. Although an exceptional student in high school that studied Nietzsche and Rimbaud in their spare time, I grew up in a rural area where hard-work was perfectly acceptable. But a part of me always wanted to be in an office somewhere, the CEO of a corporation. I wanted to do the 'thinking'. I oft times romanticized the idea. Being young with my fair share of na�vet�- if not downright hubris- I didn't realize what type of training and hard work it'd take. In fact, I neglected college at first in a way I later had to work hard to compensate for. As with any job, you have to truly love what you do to truly understand and master it. Most people, if they enjoy what they're doing, learn at an expedited rate. You'd think then more would have an easier time mastering working at home! The trouble is somewhere along the line dreams met reality, and people get scared off. If only they had a little help along the way, I've often figured, more people could accomplish their work at home dream.

Mine begin the winter of '05.

It was the summer of 2005. "Now is the winter of our discontent," Shakespeare once wrote. It was definitely that for me! I'd went to New Orleans that year with a chestful of dreams. "Great," I thought to myself "I can make good money AND help rebuild the city." Unfortunately, though things went pretty well and I'd do it all over again, I returned with my pockets pretty empty. My mother for years had been selling eBooks in different ways on the net, how-to guides on various auctions sites, and implementing many ideas of her own. She'd been a professional photography but had, somewhere along the line, decided to put her SLR down for a keyboard.

Later Odesk and eBay both become my primary source of income, but at first I had only eBay. It was one of the greatest learning experience of my life. It was much later I wrote how-tos for myself. Initially, the internet being so new- even before eBay- my concept was to set up a one page site that sold a book I'd write. Poetry perhaps or a fictionalized life-story. I know now it was a terrible idea but it sowed the seeds of my later working online. At this time, we had a pretty good economy. Things we're booming. While I'm not allowed to divulge much of our business information due to an- more or less unspoken- agreement between myself partners I have on related projects, needless to say things we're going well. Some weeks I'd bring home nearly 1,000 dollars working 20 hour work weeks! I know it sounds too good to be true, but finding your niche is the key. Build on your strengths and what you love to do!

For someone already wanting to learn business, eBay provided a short study. I devoured any and all information before me. I'd spend night after night researching the most trivial ideas to make money. The one people often laugh at is driftwood! At the last moment when going to Paris, a dream unrealizable to me til I worked at home (ironically), I'd needed some extra money at the last second and was out of things to sell. I'd noticed people sold it for aquariums and got right on developing a separate ID with a strong branding, professional ads, and inviting discounts. Within a week- from everything I could tell- I was doing as good as not just any, BUT ALL, other sellers doing this. Later I dropped this as the economy starting slipping, along with the ideas I worked that drew in most of my money, but it was one of my first big lessons in working online. 10 Ways to Unlock the Power of LinkedIn

LinkedIn is no longer a "new" phenomenon. There are now more than 70 Million members across 200 countries, dominated by US users. Members are affluent ($100k+ income on average), educated, and primarily upper/middle management, and in their early 40s. However while LinkedIn is rapidly growing among business professionals, only a small percentage of its members really harness its power. Many members end up joining LinkedIn after having gotten several invitations to join from business friends. They join, but then do little to make LinkedIn work for them. As if life, nothing just happens. You make it happen. So too with LinkedIn.

Of the many LinkedIn benefits, here are the three invaluable ones:

1. Reconnecting with people you know but may have lost touch with

Those of us who have been in business for a few years have a deep well of people we have worked with, but lost touch. Good people, people we liked. However, it's awkward to call someone out of the blue after many years, while it's easy and far less awkward to connect on LinkedIn (and you may end up speaking and meeting as a result)

2. Having access to their connections-2nd level connections.

How often do you want to meet someone yet you aren't sure who knows them? With LinkedIn, it's a snap.

3. Joining groups that are relevant to your background and interests and then joining conversations and thereby establish your expertise.

If you're a serious business networker, and in today's world everyone should be, LinkedIn is a gold mine. And needless to say, if you're looking for business opportunities, it's an invaluable tool.

Unfortunately what many people do once they join is put up a bare bones profile (if that), no photo, little summary of accomplishments, join few groups, post no information, and then complain "LinkedIn isn't working for me". If that's you, time to get on the stick. For those who want to unlock the power of LinkedIn, here are 10 simple action steps:

1. Post a (business) photo-Not your Facebook photo from your high school graduation, please.

2. Fill out your profile completely-All jobs, all collegiate experience, groups, associations, honors, awards, Boards, etc. Unless you're really not Don Draper and have been using a fictitious name, having a full profile is critical. Be sure to list all past employers, not just recent ones. Listing the more distant employers is the best way to connect with people from your "early years".

3. Join groups-LOTS of them. I have heard people recommend joining 50 groups (yes, 50). More is better. You don't have to show them all on your profile, but it'll give you access to a larger universe.

4. Update your status often-this keep others updated on what you're doing. It also provides information for the weekly update on connections.

5. Invite people to connect with you with a personal note. We have all received the generic default message, "I'd like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn". Don't use it. Using the default message is a lost opportunity to really connect with the person. Write something short and personal even if it is just "Saw you were on LinkedIn. Let's connect. Hope all is well." How many people should you connect with? Hundreds. But don't try to do this all at once. 1-2 a day is plenty. You'll get there--Use the People you May Know function--and download your Outlook Contacts.

6. Check "Who's Viewed My Profile". In many instances, you'll be able to figure out who's checking you out.

7. Ask for and give several recommendations. Think about what you want to say about others and be sure their recommendations reflect what you want to have said about yourself (if it doesn't be sure to ask them to edit-or don't post it)

8. Use the Slide Share and WordPress functions to connect with your blog or a short slide presentation on your business.

9. Simplify the public profile link eliminating all the #s and letters. It shows others you are a more serious users.

10. Use the message feature to occasionally send out messages to your connections (a link to recent blog, article etc). You can send out a group message but write it personally, and sign it with your first name only). And importantly, disable the feature where everyone can see the entire distribution list.

LinkedIn is a golden opportunity to connect and re-connect with professionals, and in so doing build your "brand" whether it's your company or just yourself. Take advantage of its power.
