Is Your Site Design "Working"?

The same is true in all media, not just for painters. Today's so-called computer artists are simply artists who have a different palette and tools, with the same mindset as others, somewhere along that artist bell curve. If you run a business and have on-site artists, or deal with them at an agency or in a freelance manner, then you know that it can be difficult at times to communicate clearly. Artists are also passionate, for the most part, and can be quite touchy when it comes to people critiquing, not to say criticizing, their work. It is important, therefore, for non-artists to learn how to communicate with Information Age Dalis and Van Goghs.

The right vocabulary

The first thing that the non-artist needs to understand is that, assuming a certain standard of talent and training, an artist's design is not good or bad. Art school instructors have been telling their Design 101 students for at least a century that the way to judge design is not by gradations of bad to good, but in terms of whether the design works. Does it do the job it is supposed to do? For animators, it means determining if the action is fluid and the story clear. For potters, it means deciding if the piece can be used as intended and look the way it should. For artists who design Web sites and print materials, it means asking, 'does the design communicate what it is supposed to, and lead people (at least a reasonable number) to take the action you want?'

Most artists do think this way, and know that their designs have to be judged on whether or not they are working. This is the term that non-artist managers should use, rather than saying a design is right or wrong, good or bad. Some younger, less experienced artists may still believe that commercial is somehow tainted (by filthy lucre, as some say), but the fact is that much of the great art from the classical Greco-Roman era to the Renaissance was created for commercial purposes. Even the Sistine Chapel ceiling is, in actuality, religious propaganda, and conveys powerful messages in just the way the reigning Pope wanted at the time. Michelangelo, a paid commercial artist, made it work.

Constant refinement

Of course, what works one day, or for one goal, may not work for others. This is why artists will repurpose, refine, revise and re-do what they have already created, to keep pace with changing (commercial) needs. Mature designers that know all of this and have worked in the commercial arena for years can still be emotionally invested in their work. If they were not invested they would not be artists. They have learned, however, in most cases, at least, to set aside their personal preferences and make their designs work for the intended purpose. Because this can be less fulfilling than wide-open creative license, most commercial artists undertake other projects to scratch that artistic itch.

As long as they have other outlets for their so-called real work, even the most elitist artist/designer can make a go of it straddling the commercial and non-commercial (read, pure) art worlds. Not everything in their oeuvre has to be judged as to whether it brings in money, and most artists get tremendous satisfaction far beyond a paycheck. However, reality being what it is, the fact that they can make a living with their artistic skills is a big plus. Still, it does take some discipline and occasional attitude adjustment to remain happy and fulfilled in a design position, especially at a firm that has no one who appreciates art and design (and where the right/wrong judgments abound instead of the works/doesn't work dichotomy).

Bottom line

If this is all news to you, and you did not know artists and designers were so, well, complicated, it would behoove you to learn a new vocabulary and deal with staff or freelance artists in a new, constructive way. When they start hearing less-critical reviews of their work, couched in terms that are appropriate to the situation (like, "This works, that doesn't"), you may find that they become much easier to deal with. You will be more likely to get site designs that work when you know how to work better with designers. Ta-da!

We live in times of great mistrust, frustration and upheaval. I'm sure you have noticed.

In America, it appears that we have a real crisis of confidence. Many Americans are disenchanted and have lost faith in our institutions. In fact, in many cases, it goes well beyond disenchantment. You might call it rage.

And what has caused this tidal wave of public rage?

All because some people say and do things that hurt us instead of help us. They operate with much lower standards and thus make the institutions themselves weak and less trustworthy.

The bottom line is that we Americans need to take matters into our own hands. Forget some of these corrupt or inept institutions. We all need to become less reliant on governments, corporations and potentially risky investments. We need to take our futures into our own hands. We each need to create our own personal future - one of our choosing.

One way millions of Americans are doing this is by becoming a home business entrepreneur. Almost everyone needs extra income. Many are tired of their jobs. Everyone loves passive income. We all know that when the time comes, we will have to supplement social security to survive in retirement. Guess what, you might be stepping in the same poop too...the dreaded "Work At Home POOP." Thank God that I was able to clean my POOP off and make a living online. However it took me a few years to do so. Work at home opportunity seekers, beware of stepping in POOP. It could destroy you.

What is work at home POOP? Well let me sum it up for you:

1. P - People who claim to be Internet marketing gurus when they are not.

Now there is nothing worst than falling into the trap of so-called gurus who claim that they are earning anywhere from $10,000 or more monthly and are not making a dime. The worst part is, they sell you their program trying to teach you how to make money that they themselves do not even know how to make.

2. O - Overwhelmed and Overloaded with too much work at home opportunity info.

Now this one could actually destroy you. This one hit me like a ton of bricks and almost "Popped my head open." I thought I was going crazy... literally. Maybe you are going through the same thing too. Each day my email box was filled with so much information that I just did not know which way to turn. I did searches on the search engines, visited forums, visited work at home websites, purchased over 100 e-books and programs and did everything possible to find the truth about how to earn a living online.

I was actually searching in vain because I ended up at a dead end, actually right where I first started... nowhere. There is nothing worst than working extremely hard day in and day out seeking information, purchasing e-books, reading those e-books, applying the instructions, etc and never earn a dime. The more money you spend, the more money you lose. You end up day after day pulling out your credit card in hopes of making the next online opportunity, only to be disappointed again, and again.

3. O - Opt-In lists from hell

Have you ever placed your name and email address in an opt-in box in order to receive more info and was spammed left and right? This is against the law, but many marketers do it anyway. To make matters worse, your email is shared and sold to other marketers who then do the same damn thing... spam your email box. Now this kind of thing is quite frustrating because you can end up spending most of your day cleaning out your email box.

To make matters worse, when you try to unsubscribe from some of these lists, your request goes unheard and you still continue to receive junk. I hate spam and I cannot imagine spamming anyone's email box. I am sure these so called gurus would not like anyone spamming their email boxes. So why they do it to others puzzles me.

4. P - Passive Income Propaganda...

Gurus have a tendency to spread their misinformation like wild fire all over the Internet. This is after all the digital age, and information spreads instantaneously with just a click of the mouse. The most popular way of perpetuating this misinformation is to send e-mail messages with headlines such as:

� "Make $2,500 per month filling out surveys"
� "10k in 30 Days..."
� "Read our step-by-step blueprint to wealth and earn $659,560 in 6 months."
� "Make thousands of dollars with this amazing method."
� "Google is hiring at-home workers"

Most of these programs are set up to make you fail. I have never found a work at home program that could make you five, six-figures or an internet millionaire overnight unless you piggyback on someone else's success by buying your income. Buying your income is the only way that I know of that can make almost anyone an "overnight sensation." And even with this method, you have to know exactly what you are doing, have some money to invest or you could get burned.

With the economy the way it is and more and more people losing their jobs, many people are jumping online and have become business, home job opportunity seekers with big dreams of making quick money. More and More people are lured into many opportunities and are left "Hanging on shoe strings." And you might be one of them... one of those poor, unlucky souls who are constantly stepping in POOP.

Fortunately, you can avoid all the sharks and earn a decent living online. For instance, selling products for large companies like Amazon, working at home as an rel=nofollow independent contractor for major corporations, buying your income, and working as a freelancer are some of the most effective means of generating a full-time income via the Internet.
