31 Reminders for Working From Home With Children

I have typed an uncomplicated list to facilitate your ordeal with the truth of working from home with children. Your days may not become precisely like these, but may possibly add up to almost the same.

1. Begin your day of working from home by informing the children you will be busy. Allow sufficient time for last-minute needs and requests.

2. Educate your little ones of when it is okay to ask you something or stop you from working when you are engaged in a project. "No, having a glass of juice is not urgent." "Yes, it is okay to let me know if the cat fell into the toilet."

5. Tidy up the plates and cutlery near or on the desk and beside the laptop. Bring the utensils and so forth to the dining room and advise everybody that they should be having their meals there, and not in your home office.

6. Lift the puppy right out of the seat near your computer.

7. Take little Tommy by the hand and bring him to his father. Completely shut the door to your home office.

8. Block your ear to the noise of your toddler banging on the latch with his toy. Find his teddy scrunched beside the hard drive and offer it to the teary-eyed little angel.

9. Begin your work at home assignment.

10. Hear your little loved ones shouting back and forth right next to your office door. You try to settle and hush them to be quiet. You attempt to not hear the explanations of each of their version of the reason for the argument. You prompt the children to your hubby for a quick resolution.

11. Close your eyes and breath in slowly and deeply. Now, begin your project once again.

12. Your hubby comes back again demanding when his dinner will be ready. With a great deal of control, let him know that it is his turn to whip up tonight's dinner.

13. Attempt to resume what you were working on. Commence the assignment that you had begun before the distractions. If you can't remember what it was, start a new project all together.

14. Little Tommy hurries in the office with sticky jam fingers held up high in the air. You notice that he is covered with it from head to toe. Older brother Johnny argues that Daddy wasn't watching him. At this point, you are yelling at hubby to come and get the two rascals and give them a bath. You get the husband to promise to watch them more attentively.

15. Now that you feel that you are ready to start working again, you realize that jam is everywhere on your notebook. You try to rub it off, but it isn't going anywhere.

16. The music starts off from the telephone not far away. You pick it up as your hubby is giving the kids a soaking in the tub. In the kindest way that you can, you explain to your friend that "No, you cannot baby-sit Laura Lee tomorrow. Explain to her that you are doing work at home.

17. Press the flash and take the next phone call that is beeping at your ear. Assure your mother that you do not want the fantastic job she heard about from her friend. Let her know that you are earning enough money while working from home. Tell her that you cannot be on the phone much longer as you need to finish the job that you were working on. Nicely listen for a few minutes longer all of the reasons why you should look for a different position that is outside your household.

18. Quickly race back to your home office before the children see that you are not in that room and believe that you are available for them and done with work.

19. Hurrying, try to get at least some of the tasks that you had on your list of things to do.

20. Little Tommy rushes back into your office, water dripping everywhere, insisting on you helping him to get his clothes on. At this point, you are hugging him while trying to convince him to run to see Daddy. Use the hug and hold method as Tommy lashes out at you screaming that he hates you. You give in, attempting to dress him as fast as you can. Now, Tommy is running back to Daddy fully clothed.

21. Try to get settled back into working.

22. Startled, you hop on a chair trying to wave a page in front of the smoke alarm so the loud screeching will shut off. The meal must be cooked. It certainly smells as though it is.

23. You hurry into the kitchen to grab something to eat with your hubby and the two boys. After all, you don't want to disappoint them.

24. The computer crashes. Wait for it to reboot.

25. After you return to your home office, you notice that you didn't save the report that you were typing. Overwhelmed, you hold your head and take a few more deep breaths, while you try to remember what in the world you were doing previously.

26. You discover that the plug for the computer to the web is not functioning. The handbook comes out with all of the phone numbers for tech support, but you cannot seem to get a real human to speak with you.

27. The boys storm into the office for cuddling and want a story-time break. You decide to walk away from the whole work at home assignment just for a while. With delight, you tell funny tales and laugh out loud. A smile seems to make everything better.

28. Clapping, you scare the kitty out of your work space area once again.

29. You discover that the kitten put his paw prints all over your laptop, wiping out more than half of the work you did.

30. Tommy has to go to the bathroom again, but only wants Mommy to assist. After the trickling, you tuck in little Tommy again in his bed with Johnny kicking at the bedside.

31. Tranquility again. Now the trick is to be able to get some of the working from home tasks completed before drifting away in dream land.

Working From Home Without Losing Your Mind

How do I do it? How do I work from home with a 5 year old and a 1 year old without losing my mind? Well, honestly sometimes I feel like I just want to hide in a closet and sleep but since that isn't an option I have some tricks that I use to make sure my day runs as smooth as possible and the girls still get their Mommy time. I work from home as a Virtual Assistant and I have a team of awesome people who also work with me. So how do I do it? One day the girls will be in school all day and I will have the 'office' to myself but until that day arrives I have a few tricks up my sleeve.

Nap Time

Do not, I repeat DO NOT schedule a client call 20 minutes before it is nap time for your baby! I did that once and was so embarrassed. Abigail was so fussy, all she wanted to do was cuddle up with me and take a nap. But since I couldn't really snuggle with her at that moment all she did was scream and I had to tell the client that I needed to call them back.

Instead, schedule your client calls for around when your baby wakes up from their nap. They are more than likely ready to play alone and be content without you for a about 20 minutes or so while you take the call. I have also tried to schedule client calls for when she is napping, however this can backfire on you because when they wake up they are screaming and you need to go into their room and pick them up etc and the client will hear all of that.

Movies

I've been known to turn on a movie in the afternoon to help get me through that dreaded 4:00 - 5:00 hour. That is the time when they are a little sleep, hungry and cranky. I get them a snack, get their pillows, blankets and make a little snuggle nest for them to chill out in. Then I turn on a movie and it keeps them quite for a little while and gives me some time to work on a project.

Purses & Boxes

When working at my desk or even in the playroom I get a few bags or purses and fill them with little toys. For some reason my 1 year old loves to unpack and repack bags and purses, this will keep her busy for about 15 minutes and sometimes that is long enough for me to do a quick email to a client or finish up a project. When she comes crawling over to me I plop down a purse in front of her and say "wow, what is in the bag" and she in good to go! I also keep a small toy box in the office and near my desk. It is filled will all kinds of random toys. I often rotate the toys with others around the house so the box isn't full of the same old stuff. This is great for cleaning up the room too, just toss it all in the box and poof the room is clean.

TV Time

How much TV does your kid watch? If you tell me less than an hour a day then you are lying and you have a maid, cook and nanny! There is nothing wrong with turning on Nick, Sprout or The Disney Channel while you get some work done around the house. I do however strongly encourage that for every hour your kid watches TV you spend time with them playing a game or reading a book or even dare I say it...go to the park. There certainly has to be a balance so be sure to not have your kid watch TV all day, just a few hours is good.

Important News

Do your kids always bug you the moment you are on the phone? To help curb this behavior I tell the kids that I am going to get on a call with a client (they know what that is) and I ask if they have any important news for me. I give them about 10 minutes to 'think' about it and then I get on the call with the client. Generally, they will come to me just few minutes before my call and tell me something crazy about school or one of her friends and I thank them for telling me the important news and then remind her them I am about to get on a call with a client. I would have to say that this one works very well.

Play Date Trades

I often have my kids go on playdates and that is the perfect time to sneak in some client work. Just be sure to repay the favor and have your kids friends over for some fun as well.

Have a Satellite Office

I utilize Gmail and online project management tools so I can work from any computer, anywhere. I have a few office spaces around the house. The main office is downstairs in our 'office' and that is where most of my work stuff is kept such as books, binders and resource materials. Then upstairs, tucked in my bedroom I have a desk for my laptop. This desk is pretty cool because it looks like a dresser, and even has 3 drawers and desk space. I spend a lot of my time upstairs, the play room is upstairs and so it the laundry room and the girls bedrooms. I find that this is a good space to work in because I can work at night when the baby is sleeping I don't need to run upstairs to get her when she wakes, just a short walk down the hall. My other workspace is a small table in the play room. There are times when I need to be in the same room as the kids, normally when they are watching a movie I am in the room with them. I set up my laptop on the little table and all is good.

Invest in an Android phone or iPhone

I used to have a Blackberry and thought it was fantastic, but I also got it 2 years ago. My contract was finally up and I upgraded to a Samsung Epic phone which runs on the Android network. Having a phone like this is super because I can work from anywhere. With my BlackBerry, I was able to get my email and get on the Internet but with an Android phone, it is a a whole new ballgame. The network is so much faster now, especially with 4G and the ability to connect to WiFi networks. I can log into my blog or even clients sites and make changes as needed. I am also able to connect to my project management system, Basecamp as well as my invoicing tool Freshbooks. Just the other day while out to dinner with the family I was able to draft up an invoice and send it off to the client and was paid within minutes!

Don't Do It Alone

Lastly, I have to advise any Virtual Assistant to develop a team of people to help you out. It was the best thing that I did to save my sanity. I was really hesitant to do it at first because I thought that I wouldn't make any money if I was 'farming' out all of the work. However, what I found is that the clients that I already have really welcomed the idea of being able to take advantage of more services that I had to offer and ended up purchasing more hours from my company. So not only was I able to continue to work on their project, but I was able to give out work to my team as well.

Getting Started in the Haunted House Industry

Starting a Haunted Attraction may may seem daunting, or financially out of reach. There are hundreds of questions to be answered, such as: How much will rent be? Will the Fire Marshall make life too difficult? How will I get financing to get me to opening night? Can I possibly be profitable enough to make it worth my time? How much competition is really out there?

Why not consider a Haunted Forest? No doubt you have heard of farmers turning their land into mini amusement parks geared to families. Corn Mazes, and other not-so-scary activities have become big business in the fall/winter. Even in the biggest cities, it is not a terribly long drive to a piece of land where this is possible, like Markoffs Haunted Forest, outside Washington D.C, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors every October.

Here's why a Haunted Forest may be easier as a start up business than a traditional Haunted House 1) Dealing with the Fire Marshall just got a whole lot easier. 2) Lower start up costs. No need for multi-thousand dollar animatronics and elaborate sets. A walk through dark woods can be scary to begin with. You can keep your costs down by using natural elements to scare the bejezus out of people 3) Land is easier to find than rentable (and safe) buildings.

The Haunted Attraction Industry has grown immensely in the last decade. It seems everywhere you turn there is a new or better haunt going up. There were over 10 million Gooogle searches in 2010 alone for "haunted house", not to mention the millions of other searches that included those words.

GETTING STARTED 1) Identify suitable parcels that are big enough (over 25 acres), have at least 5 acres of open space (parking) and 3 to 5 acres of wooded space. The fewer neighbors the better (ideally land owners with large parcels who would not be disturbed by chainsaws and screaming.)

2) Contact the local municipality to find out permitting requirements. Sometimes you can get a temporary permit to operate 15 days or less without a lot of red tape and public disclosures. If not, the process could take as long as 4-6 months. They'll want a detailed site plan, projections, and the opportunity to inform neighbors and allow them to bring up objections.

3) Contact land owners. Ideally you want someone who owns a piece that is not being farmed, or is being rented to another farmer. Its even better if nobody lives there. Tell them you would like to explore a non-agricultural use for their land that could net them multiple thousands of dollars in just a few months a year. If they want to talk further, set up a meeting to find out what they think the land might be worth for your activities. Let them lead with a number, but be prepared to discuss what you will pay, perhaps a "per head" lease of $1 or $2. If you do the industry average in attendance of 7,500 patrons the land owner will get $7,500-$15,000.

The Pros and Cons of Working at Home

Over a year ago I moved with my husband to a new town because he had found a great job there. Meanwhile I had to give up my own great job, on the basis that he earned a lot more than I did and we definitely needed the money. We have a mortgage, 2 kids to feed and lots of bills to pay.

At first I thought it would be easy enough to find a new job in our new town. After months of searching though, nothing good was coming my way. With our two children still needing their mom around, it was difficult to find something that would allow me to spend time with them and make a living.

I gotta say, I was on the verge of getting a part-time job bagging groceries when I discovered that there were a lot of work opportunities online. I didn't have to spend half the day on my feet making a pittance! Hooray!

I started my work at home career by writing articles for various online companies. All I needed was a computer and internet access and I was ready to go. After a few months I realized that there are indeed pros and cons when it comes to working at home.

Pros
Obviously, being at home allows me to keep an eye on my kids and the house. I don't have to drop them off at daycare and more importantly, I spend quality time with them.

I also save a lot of money on transportation, food and clothes. I don't spend on gassing up the car, or buying lunch at a take out place or on business clothes for the office. I can work in pajamas if I wanted to!

My time is also my own. I can allocate my working hours the way I want so that I have the time to pick up my kids and do the chores without my work suffering. I sleep late so I have the time to catch up on work in the evenings when the kids are in bed and the house is settled.

Cons
Sometimes the work does pile up and I have to put all my concentration on the job but the children are in the other room screaming their heads off for attention. That would never happen in a normal office. Later on, I cleared out the guest room and made it my "no kids zone" office wherein I can concentrate on my work for a few hours without disruption. It's working so far!

The lack of company can also be a con if you like interacting with people on a daily basis. I have to admit I missed the water cooler talk but it was something I could survive without.
