Becoming a writer requires two abilities. You must be able to write clearly and effectively; being able to express your thoughts in a way that convey meaning while keeping the reader engaged. You must also be able to sell your writing, which can be the more difficult part. When you decide to start writing for a living, you will first need to be sure you have the ability to write. If you are able to write at a high school level with very good grammar and syntax, you will be ahead of the pack. Thankfully, for those of us who need help with these things, most modern word processing software helps you with spelling, grammar and sentence structure. Of course, you still need to be able to organize your ideas. Try writing your ideas out in an outline first, then writing out a rough draft. Try to introduce your point, then give supporting ideas, then summarize. This is the basic formula most writers use. To improve your writing, read as much as you can; especially Internet articles and short news items and observe how the writer organizes his or her thoughts. With practice, you can develop the skill to put together your thoughts very effectively. Most writers weren't born to write out their ideas, they just started writing and gradually improved their skills. The second part of the writer's plan is to be able to sell your writing. Many writers are absolutely fantastic artists or reporters, but they have to give up their writing or have to work outside jobs to support themselves. If you want to earn with your writing, you have to be able to sell it. If you have a completed novel, you'll have to submit it to publishers to see if they are interested in pursuing a deal sometime in the future. If you are simply a writer and want to earn, it is a different story. There are many services that offer contests for writers. The prizes are usually small, around $25 for the best article in a competition. There are also jobs for writers, but you have to advertise yourself. In the "Resumes" section of online marketplaces, you can post a short resume promoting yourself as an ad copy writer, a short story writer, a resume writer, or even promote yourself as looking for a sponsor. Many people have found writing jobs this way. Another way to sell your writing is simply to publish and sell the contents of your blog, or sell E-Book compilations of your blog posts online. Your blogging service should be able to give you the details on how to do this. There are many people selling E-Books which gets your writing out there in front of people who otherwise only get the information from blogs or trial and error. Your knowledge and ability to write is what they are willing to pay for, so keep in mind the idea of selling your thoughts and ideas in E-Book form. In short, writing as a job is a great thing, but you have to be able to write, and be able to promote your writing. You have to get your work in front of people who are willing to pay for it.
