Beware of Fraudulent E-mails

"Hi. I just received an official looking e-mail from my small business payment processor that looked suspicious. It said that the company noticed fraudulent activity on my account and wanted me to log-in to verify that the account was mine. For my protection, it said, the account would be on hold until I verified the account. I have a lot of clients paying me online through that processor and can't afford to have my account suspended. I clicked the link in the e-mail. The company's homepage and a form popped up asking me to enter my ATM card number, user name, password and social security number in order to verify and unlock my account. I was hesitant to put all that information in there, so I took another look at the e-mail. The e-mail address sending the e-mail was from my payment processor, but there were a lot of spelling errors in the e-mail. It also said 'Dear Sir.' Usually e-mails from this company say 'Dear Company Name.' I don't know if it's really official, but I don't want to lose my online payment privileges. What do I do?"

- Check the destination of the URL before you click it. You can do this by running your cursor over the URL. In most e-mail programs, a little yellow box will pop up showing you the destination. -Do not download suspicious looking attachments. Even if it looks to be from your bank, most likely it is a computer virus.

Penalties and fines for violations are $100 per person affected with a maximum cap of $50,000.

FTC Issues Guides for Peer-to-Peer Networks

On February 22, 2010, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced that it had notified almost 100 organizations -- including large and small private and public companies, schools, and local governments - that their customers' or employees' personal information was vulnerable on peer-to-peer (P2P) networks.

The FTC was concerned that P2P networks operated by these organizations may inadvertently be providing an opening for unintentional access to personal information. According to FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz, "Companies should take a hard look at their systems to ensure that there are no unauthorized P2P file-sharing programs and that authorized programs are properly configured and secure."

In addition to the notification letters, the FTC issued a guide on its ftc.gov website entitled "Peer-to-Peer File Sharing: A Guide For Business". The founder and former CEO of ControlScan entered into a separate settlement requiring him to pay $102,000 in ill-gotten gains.

Privacy and security certification programs such as ControlScan are used by webmasters to provide assurance to consumers regarding how the website treats the privacy and security of personal information. The FTC alleged that ControlScan provided its certifications to websites with "little or no verification" of their privacy protections.

2. A company will never make you pay for training. Now there are great business programs on the internet (that I highly recommend) that charge you $50 or less for a few e-books, a business plan, and probably a website (which is way cheaper than these programs should be) but if a company tells you they are going to hire you but they need you to send them $300 for training... make sure your credit card stays in your wallet.

3. A legit online business will never ask you for your social security number. This is the biggest clue you will get that something is a scam. As a matter of fact, never give your social security number to anyone unless it is for taxes at a regular job (which you most likely will never make good money at).

4. Use PayPal to buy any e-book you purchase. I've never had a problem with pay-pal. It's easy to set up and it helps secure your credit card. Use it!

5. I personally recommend affiliate marketing programs. Out of everything that I've tried (surveys, freelance, etc.) affiliate marketing worked the best. There are great programs out there and it is very easy to get started. Yes, it takes a little work to get started but it is not hard and the rewards are endless.
