Make Money Serving Soup and Sandwiches

During a recession, such as we have now, many people search for ways to get by on limited amounts of cash. This may be a good time to start a business serving low-cost meals consisting mainly of soup and sandwiches. You can prepare these meals in your kitchen and bring them to areas with likely customers. You probably will need a pickup truck or van to transport your meals.

Choosing what meals to prepare -- The type of soup and sandwiches you prepare depends on the preferences of your customers. The main idea is to serve food that is delicious, substantial, and easy to prepare. You might want to include appropriate drinks with your meals. In cold weather, you could serve coffee, cocoa, or tea. In warm weather, you could serve lemonade, iced water, or iced tea.

Preparing and transporting the meals - You probably want to prepare the sandwiches first, then the soup and any drinks afterward. Use Thermos bottles or Thermos jugs to maintain the temperature of the soup and drinks. Wrap the individual sandwiches and place in a box or basket. Different colored wrappings can be used to indicate the various types of sandwiches. You could place labels on the bottles or jugs to indicate their contents. After you have prepared and packaged the meals, place the various containers in your vehicle and transport to your customers.

Serving the meals -- The wrapped sandwiches are ready to be served as is. You can serve the soup either in plastic bowls with plastic spoons, or in plastic cups. The drinks could be served in plastic cups. You might want to bring along a garbage container so your customers won't be littering the sidewalk.

Save money on ingredients -- You can save money by purchasing your ingredients in volume at discount stores or restaurants supply houses. As you become familiar with the business, you will learn the best places to buy various ingredients.

General guidelines for starting this business -- I recommend that you consider the following items before starting your business:

Verify that there is a suitable demand for your meals
Determine how much the likely customers are willing to pay for your meals
Determine if you are allowed to operate a home based business in your area
Determine and satisfy any governmental and insurance requirements
Keep your startup and operating expenses to a minimum
Start out small, and then expand to achieve your desired profit level

Good luck in your business venture.
