7 Musts When Starting a Business Online

I was asked this yesterday - what are the "must do" things when starting a business online. It was asked at a seminar I was attending and when someone asked me from the floor during a Q&A session, I really had to answer without giving any prior thought to my response. As happens in those situations, the answer comes directly from the heart. Consequently, I thought I would share my answer with all of you. So, my 7 "Must Dos" are:

Be determined and have great will power. Starting a business online is not a get rich quick scheme, despite what you hear during various product launches, which can be all hype and no substance. There is no such thing as a push button, instant success program or software. Trust me - it does not exist. Making money online is a great industry but you need to have determination and will power to withstand the early humps and bumps and frustration of not seeing the money coming in. Persevere, and it will come!

Use WordPress for your site. It is a great product and easy to use. It is highly flexible and you do not have to be a programmer or any sort of technical genius to work with it. (I can use it, so that proves that point!)

Know your target market. Sounds obvious, but often ignored. Let me take an example to make the point here. You have decided that you are going to target all Harley Davidson owners, and that is great. So, you know your market - right? Well, maybe! You know who they are, but do you know how they like to be communicated with? How often? Do they prefer detailed technical material or exciting news? What style of writing will you have to adapt to really connect with them? So on and so on... you need to know answers to these sort of questions before you can say that you know your market.

Know how you are going to get targeted traffic. Please note that I said "targeted", and that is critical. So what methods of traffic generation do you have to undertake to generate the traffic from the audience that you are targeting. There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to driving traffic to your site.

Get a good domain name. Ideally, if you can get one with the keywords in it. However, that is not always possible. But get one that reflects how you want to be perceived by your target market.

Focus on quality content for your site. I cannot overstate the importance of this. Quality content is critical. Content is not, and I repeat NOT just there to load up with keywords for your ranking. In fact doing this is detrimental to your site. Also, you will end up with silly content as you are working around your keywords and not focusing on the content. If you are uncomfortable writing, then hire someone to do it for you. There are plenty available in various places like Elance and ODesk, but, a word of warning, get sight of their work before you commission them to do it for you. There are many there who do not have English as their first language and it can really show. But good ones are there, and it is not expensive.

Have a plan. Anyone who has come across my material before will know how passionate I am about this. This is a business, so treat it as one. Invest the time in making a detailed plan of action, and then stick to it.

So, they are my magnificent 7 "must dos" when starting a business online. Are there others? Yes, but if you do these then you are well on your way!

Facebook - Riding the Crest of Real-Time Advertising

Facebook has stepped up the game in the advertising stakes as this month it the web giant unveiled its behavioural targeting and real-time marketing, offering up the opportunity for marketers to target swells of sentiment in much the same was as Twitter does. For the first time as far as we know Facebook have begun tests using complex algorithms to target ads. The tests are currently only being conducted on 1% of users, however, this represents a focus group of 6 million people.

This is a step-up from Facebook's most recent effort of sponsored stories whereby users' brand interactions would be re-posted as an ad on the side bar. The issue here lied in the fact that targeting was reliant on users engaging with brands on the platform. Previous to this Facebook had been monitoring user and brand interaction in order to target relevant ads at users. Mining offers the next logical step by tuning into users real-time conversations in order to offer users what they want as soon as they know they want it. For example, you may update your status with "Mmm, I could go for some pizza tonight" and could instantly receive an ad or voucher from Domino's or Pizza Hut.

Currently Facebook collects and collates data on users activities, posts and interactions in order to add them into target audiences based on the data collected over time. Keywords are a small part of that equation, but Facebook says that sometimes keywords aren't even used. The company states that delivering ads based on user conversations is a complex algorithm that must be continuously updated and changed over time. Currently though, the tests are concentrating on the sites ability to target ads at split-second speed, as soon as the user makes a statement that is a match for an ad in the system.

With real-time delivery the mere mention of going out for dinner, fancying a beer, going for a run or even just watching a film is transformed into an opportunity to serve immediate ads, expanding the target audience exponentially beyond using usual targeting methods such as likes. Facebook did not need to create any new ads for this test, and no particular advertiser has been tapped to participate as a user may not have to have liked any football pages, or indicated that football is even of interest on their profile page, however, the mention of a trip to the pub to watch the latest international makes them an instant part of the Adidas target demographic. The moment between a potential customer expressing a desire and deciding on how to fulfill that desire is a key moment for advertisers, and therefore the real-time ad model puts advertisers in front of a user at that very delicate, decisive moment.

"The long-held promise of local is to deliver timely, relevant and measurable ads which drive actions such as commerce, so if Facebook is moving in this direction, it's brilliant," said Reggie Bradford, CEO of Facebook software and marketing company Vitrue. "This is a massive market shift everyone is pivoting toward, led by services such as Groupon. Facebook has the power of the graph of me and my friends placing them in the position to dominate this medium." Users often express the sentiment that they "don't even notice the ads," so engrossed are they in their Facebook activities. Those that do notice the ads complain they are not relevant to their interests. "All the ads I get are military-related, for building muscle or for big busty Asians in Florida who want men over 45," said Facebook user and Florida-based marketing student Mike Hanby, adding that he was not a target for any of those topics. "I hope that doesn't say anything bad about me."

This new feature does not alter the basic algorithm of 'expression of interest' resulting in relevant ads being promoted, the difference being that such ads are delivered in real-time so as to affect the users decision making process when they are most vulnerable to persuasion, whether it be through clever adverts, advice or discounts. The point of the algorithm is not to detect key words but in-fact to detect whether or not there is any commercial intent behind statements. "You might have the potential of seeing some unfortunate ads if not targeted correctly," said eMarketer social-media analyst Debra Aho Williamson. "If I'm talking generally about Starbucks - 'my latte was cold' - would it be weird to then see an ad from Costa?"

With Facebook ads performance generally being pretty poor (there are obviously some exceptions to this) with a reported click through rate of 0.051% in 2010 (about half the industry average) this could provide a real break-through for big brands looking to engage with fans via social media channels. It could also see Facebook's value rise even further as it becomes THE market leader in the advertising stakes. Facebook have stated that the test will continue indefinitely, but have declined to comment on the test results so far.

With such exciting occurrences it can be daunting trying to keep up to date with all the most recent happenings in the world of the web so why not get involved in local communities such as rel=nofollow [http://www.mycleveragency.com/]social media London in order to get connected with the brightest minds in the business.

For now however, we must wait with baited breath to find out the true potential of Facebook's latest venture.

Writing Great Adverts to Promote Your Online Business

There's a real temptation when you're setting up an online business to exclude traditional methods of promotion: methods which have been tried and tested over the years, long before the internet was the great driving force it is today. The temptation is to plough your entire promotional budget into Search Engine Optimisation or buying banners. If this is you, it might just be time to think again.

The most successful marketing strategies for all businesses (online and off) are those which draw on innovative and traditional solutions. Good old fashioned brochures sometimes get forgotten about in today's online world, but a brochure can be a really effective way to get your message out to your target audience. Another way of promoting your online business is 'on the page' advertising in appropriate publications which are bought, read and trusted by your target audience. On the page advertising can be really effective in attracting appropriate visitors to your website. That said, you should be very careful when opting for these types of ads. Here's our top tips for securing and placing your ad:

1. Never pay the full price. Even the most prestigious of publications have a good margin for negotiation when they're selling their advertising space. Take advantage of this and bag yourself a good deal.

2. Secure a spot above the fold. If you're advertising in a newspaper, make sure your ad is positioned in the top half of the page. It's more likely to be read by casual as well as serious readers.

3. Opt for the right hand page. On printed publications, the readers eye is most commonly orientated towards the right, so always try to make sure your ad appears on the right hand page or on one of the right hand columns.

4. Don't even think about brand advertising. If you think of the likes of Nike, all they need to write is "just do it" and you know who's advertising. Most small businesses should never think of adopting this approach. The remainder of this article explains the style of advert a small business should aim for.

5. Don't follow the masses. It may well be that all your competitors advertise in a publication, but that doesn't necessarily mean that publication will work for you. Check it, test it and make sure your money is being well spent.

Once you've identified the right publication; verified that it IS in fact read by your target audience; negotiated yourself a good price and position, what do you do next?

Point number 4. talks about brand advertising and the fact that rel=nofollow small businesses should not adopt this approach. So as a small business, what style of advert should you aim to design? The answer to this is a direct response advert. A direct response advert is one which very clearly asks the reader to do something, ie. to respond. Here are our top tips for writing a Direct response ad:

a. Clean and clear. Make sure your ad design is clean and clear. If people find the style confusing they're unlikely to take the time to delve deeper.

b. Headline. It's essential that your ad contains an attention drawing headline. It really needs to stand out and grab the eye of your target market.

c. Get to the point. You have a limited amount of space, time and words to get your message over, so you need to be specific, be factual and get to the point quickly and concisely.

d. Address the reader. Present the reader with a good reason to take action as a result of your ad. Speak in benefit terms rather than features and directly address your target audience's needs.

e. Call to action. At the end of your ad, ask your target customer to do something. Make it really clear what you want them to do eg. visit your website, phone you or return a coupon.

f. Contact details. Make sure your contact details are prominently situated on your ad, making it easy for people to get in touch.

g. Proof-read. Take the time to proof-read your ad properly. There's no point discovering a week after the ad has been featured that you've mis-typed your telephone number or website address!

To summarise, think about direct response advertising as simple as A B C...get your target customer's ATTENTION, present the BENEFITS of your business and encourage them to CONTACT you. Finally, don't forget to test different styles of ad to see which works best for your business.

Creating Effective Website Content

Often when people are confronted with the task of developing content for their website they are perplexed and filled with indecision as how to start. Following some these basic guidelines, will not only help you to produce quality content that is relevant, but will help you rank well in Google as well.

Start by brainstorming ideas for your site's content. Ask yourself some basic questions such as: Who is your audience? Who is going to be using the site? Are they computer savvy? Are they looking for information? Reviews on a product? Or are they looking for a service? Consider the age, sex, socioeconomic status, geographic location, relevant interests or hobbies of your viewer important to consider? These questions will help set the tone of your content and give you direction to begin writing.

Sometimes the answers are very straightforward based upon the products or services you offer. Provide useful and succinct content for exactly what a visitor will need to know when visiting your site, or might want to know before making a purchase. Some reasons for coming to your site might include: product specifications, product features, product reviews, shipping or ordering information, pricing and availability of products.

The content of your website communicate exactly what your website is about to your visitors and is the primary source of information that search engine bots use in determining how to index your website. The most recent algorithm update from Google is the most recent attempt to remove "webspam" or, the junk results you might get in search results when websites try to cheat their way into higher positions. Websites that once enjoyed high rankings due to scraped and duplicate content are now experiencing a huge drop in rankings. This new algorithm update to the "new Google" means now more than ever, well written, original textual content is mandatory for all onsite and offsite web content at the risk of incurring ranking penalties from Google. The new Google standard dictates quality over quantity.

Conduct keyword research for your business, service or product that you are building the site for. Use tools such as Google's Keyword Tool to generate keyword for targeted content. Choose approximately 3-5 terms per page. The best approach is to develop well written, relevant content for your website that is not bloated with keywords or comes across as being "spammy". It must be 100% original. If you do need to quote other sites be sure to use proper HTML tags and syntax to mark the text as a citation or a reference. You should have a minimum of 500 words of content on your homepage. Be sure to include several instances and iterations of the keywords you will be targeting.

An often overlooked area of content writing is writing content for the landing pages of your site. Landing pages are the entry pages that your target audience land on when visiting your site. What page they land on depends mainly on your SEO optimization strategy and link building techniques. Work closely with an SEO specialist to determine what your link building strategy will be and what internal pages to target. For example, If you sell "widgets" you might target your homepage for a generic phrase such as "industrial widgets". You might then have an internal page ranking for "red widgets" and another for "blue widgets". Both would be optimized for those related search terms.

You should have approximately 400-600 words of textual content per landing page. It is important not to neglect content on these pages. Internal pages tend to create conversions much more readily than someone landing on a homepage. The homepage is typically more general in nature and usual provides an overview of what you have to offer. Your internal pages are where you have your products or services.

People coming to the homepage are typically looking for information or "just browsing". Those coming in to an internal page have already done their research and are more likely to be prepared to purchase. An analog would be a person going to a store and "just browsing", as opposed to someone going directly to the department they want with a specific product in mind.

Do not neglect your internal product pages either. The same rules of good content creation apply to these pages as well. Create unique, keyword focused content that will be useful when a person is conducting a web search for similar products or services.

The content on your site is not "final" once it is live on your web server. You can edit it freely and continue to revise and further optimize the content throughout your entire site. Google bots will visit your site more frequently if you do so. Remember to create your site content for your visitors. Providing well written copy will help to spread your business's message products and services and will lead to more conversions of visitors in to customers.

Online - Making Money - Important Facts

If you're like most people you love making money, so why not make it online with your home computer. You could even use it to achieve a full time income, it's like a dream come true isn't it!

When I did it, instead of giving up to what seemed to me a daunting task, I decided to do some extensive research into internet marketing.

I did this so that my experience online if applied properly would be a fantastic and smooth way of making money with my home computer.

When your ready to take this step there are some important facts you should know in order to succeed through internet marketing.

Advertising using banners doesn't work as good as using text links. It does depend on the subject though, and that's why you should always test which works best for your site, banners or text or both.

Make sure what your selling on the website is related to the context of your site page. For example if you have a page on beauty products don't mix it with unrelated products like a line of clothing. Sometimes it's very tempting to sell other products but stay with what your target market is after. Before building your marketing site, you should know what your target market is.

To be a successful marketer you will have to create a website which deals directly to the market your trying to sell to, and be able to interpret a specific market needs.

Another important fact is to be completely truthful to your prospective customers. They can smell a scam from a long way off and will be running with their credit card over to someone else's site!

When writing reviews about products on your site, make sure you are honest in your description. Don't try to sell something that you haven't tried or used yourself, because you can't talk about the benefits or features about it truthfully. Also when reviewing a product it's a good thing to talk about the possible negative side of it, again to reflect your honesty. People will recognize this and learn to trust you.

Another important fact about making money online is to track your sales, what's selling and what's not. If a product isn't moving then replace it again and again, until you find one that does, make sure to track all your products.

Do your homework and research, owning a website that markets products is a somewhat daunting adventure to say the least and can be costly. There is a way around all this time consuming work to making money online and that is to buy a website that is already up and running with a proven track record, that guarantees your success.

Home Based Business - The Power of Niche Marketing

If you are considering entering or have joined the Home Based Business industry, you need to understand and learn the power of niche marketing. When you truly understand the benefits of this type of marketing and take advantage of this type of Home Business, you will be on your way to creating a very high income.

What is Niche Marketing?

A niche can be a specific category within the whole of the internet market place. This can be a very broad market, or you can target a very specific spot within that category. For instance, let's take the category of Golf. The category of golf can cover a very broad segment of that market. There are a very large amount of items that you could market in the category of golf. But you can also break that down into a very defined segment, such as; How to correct my golf swing. If you wish you can market to that specific "Niche". Which is a very good thing to do, because if a person is going to type that phrase into Google you can be assured that they are looking for answers, they are a buyer which is what you want.

How can you benefit from Niche Marketing?

If you properly use niche marketing you can target specific buyers, people who are actually looking to buy. Also there is even a greater benefit. There are no limits to the amount of niches out there. You are only limited by your own imagination. For each niche you personally target you will create a website to market the product for that niche. That becomes your own little "Business". It allows you to duplicate yourself. Right now if you work a job you are limited to how much you can work in a day and how much you can earn in a day or week or month because there is only one of you. If you get hurt and can't work your income stops. But if you have multiple websites targeting multiple niches you virtually have an unlimited income source!

What other advantages are there to Niche Marketing?

Niche marketing also allows you to sell a product that you don't own, you don't have to stock and you don't have to ship. It doesn't get any better than that! It allows you the freedom to work from home. All you need to operate your business is a computer and an internet connection. Once you know the tricks you can have a whole new website up and going on the net in under half an hour. My last site I set up, I wrote the front page article from scratch and had the whole site on the internet from scratch in under an hour. And as I said above, you can have as many sites as you can imagine. Another advantage is this, it's done from you laptop, so it can go anywhere you wish to go. You can't do that with your job. Now that's freedom! And that is what you can create with a Home Based Business.

Make R5,000-R6,500 a Week Writing

Public Relations stories!

Yes, you can make R5,000-R6,000 a week from home. PR is the art of getting free exposure through newspaper articles, radio shows and TV programmes. Swanky agencies charge thousands for doing what you can do cheaper, better and more profitably from home.

1. Every company needs PR but medium-sized businesses are your best clients. Target clients in your immediate area. It's easy to get free exposure for local companies from your local newspapers, for instance. They're crying out for good stories to fill their pages.

2. Agree to a new PR story with your client every Monday morning. The best stories include:

A new product or new lower price.
A big deal that's just been signed.
Charity donation.
Your client's take on an important local or national story.
"How to" information leading to a recommendation for your client's services.
Leadership or specialist advice (from the company's MD).

3. Now write that story up into a press release.

Use the firm's stationery.
Write "News Release" in capitals across the centre of the top of the page.
Place the words "Release Date" a few lines below this and put the date.
Lead with people, names, local interest, exciting headlines and newsworthy angles.

Don't over "rave" about the company you're representing. Good publicity is inferred rather than stated.

Make sure the press release includes full contact details for your client's business.
End with your contact details in case the journalist wants more information.
Write in the style of the publication you're targeting.
Ensure the company you're working for approves every press release before you send it. It's embarrassing and unprofessional to have to withdraw a press release before the publication you sent it to goes to print.

4. Mail, fax or email newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations that match the target market of the company. Wednesday and Thursday are good days. Journalists are often desperate for space fillers at the end of the week.

5. Develop a relationship with the editor of your target publications. Issues are usually planned three months ahead. So ask for their features list and see if you can contribute a "space filler" that will suit these articles. But don't expect every article you submit to be published. If an editor doesn't like your piece, ask for some feedback so you can submit a better article next time. But don't harass the editor!

6. Bill your client. A short paragraph or 20 seconds of airtime can literally be worth R5,000-R50,000 free advertising to your client. So, even as a newcomer, you should charge R1,000-R1,300 for writing one press release. Build a base of five regular clients and you'll earn R5,000-R6,500 each week from part-time home PR. (It's also a good idea to charge per article to start with and then move onto a monthly retainer fee thereafter.)

7. Keep a clippings file of all published press releases to build your own personal portfolio. And don't forget to send your client a copy too.

Even one or two hours worth of work a week could secure you as much as an extra R6,500 a month!

SEO - The First Step

SEO is a process that cannot be rushed - indeed Google and the other major search engines treat a gradual improvement in a website's search engine ranking position ("SERPS") as a positive factor in ranking highly. It indicates a natural growth of a website rather than one which is trying to manipulate the rankings. Unethical SEO methods, sometimes known as "black-hat" methods, can create rapid increases in search engine ranking position but the techniques that they use can be easily detected by the search engines and the results of such efforts are short-lived. They can even lead to penalties or black-listing by the search engines. This is why the majority of businesses accept that such methods are counter-productive.

The first step is to lay a strong foundation. Just as a house with a strong foundation will be stable and last a long time, so will an SEO campaign. The house analogy is also true for on-going maintenance. If you do not regularly maintain your SEO campaign then it will fall into dis-repair and start to deteriorate.

So how do you get started on ethical or "white-hat" search engine optimisation?

The first step to successful SEO is Keyword Research and Analysis.

Many new business owners use brainstorming sessions to come up with an initial set of 5-15 keywords, which are usually phrases of 2 - 4 words in practise. They are phrases that they are familiar with but sometimes the people involved in a business are so close to the fine detail that they do not necessarily use the phrases that the average customer would use. Even if the business people are confident that they have the right keywords, some research and analysis can always be useful for coming up with some unexpected keywords. It is also critical in prioritising the keyword list by estimating traffic (i.e the number of expected visitors per month) and determining competition.

Keyword research can be performed by any number of tools and a good place to start is Google's own keyword tool. However, this is heavily skewed towards AdWords Pay-per-click (PPC) users and inclined to suggest phrases with the highest advertisement revenue. The estimates of clicks per month are also very approximate. So it is worthwhile also trying another tool - many of them are free such as Yahoo! Search Marketing (previously known as Overture) and Good Keywords. Keyword tools can help with a more lateral approach to discovering keywords for a website's target market.

Typically a keyword tool works by allowing you to type in all of the keywords that have come out of the brainstorming session and will list estimates of the number of times that keyword (phrase) was typed in per month, both locally in your own country and globally, which is useful if you are targeting a worldwide audience. It is easy to get excited about the numbers when you first see them but remember that the results are estimates and include any phrase that was typed in that included your target phrase. For example if your target phrase is "kids toys" because you sell kids toys you will see all the results for people who types search terms such as "wholesale kids toys", "sell kids toys", "problems with kids toys" etc. So it is important that you narrow the results which, in the Google Keyword Tool can be done by selecting the "exact" option to show only those searches where people typed in the exact phrase "kids toys".

This process will help to refine the list of keywords to target by showing those with the most visitors per month in your target region. It is very often the case that the keywords with the most traffic will be those that are the most competitive i.e those for which most businesses want to appear on page one of the search engines.

The best approach for a small business is to target a range of keywords from the most competitive through the medium traffic/medium competition keywords and also including some "long-tail" keywords. Long-tail keywords are those that contain 3 or more words and have very low traffic but are very specific so that the chances of converting the visitor into a paying customer are high. Long-tail keywords are a whole topic in their own right within the field of search engine optimisation and are covered in detail elsewhere.
