When I read the articles or posts from non-teachers, even though they are considered the expert in their field, I often times find myself relying on my previous knowledge of the topic to understand what I'm reading. The reason is because these "experts" write as if they are talking to themselves or to other experts. They use language and vocabulary that they understand, but they fail to consider their audience or they don't even consider the possibility that the person reading their article or post doesn't have the background information necessary to understand what they are saying. Many times they have some really great advice to offer, but because it's written at the "expert" level, beginners don't get it.

That's why we teachers have an advantage over these experts. We naturally consider our audience when we are giving information. We have been trained in the art of communication. Most of us have spent years perfecting our communication skills. We know to use synonyms for tough vocabulary. We explain complex concepts in a way that is easier to understand everyday in our classrooms. We instinctively teach to beginners. That is why I believe that teachers can gain a greater Internet audience than those who are considered the experts in a particular field. Did You Get Laid Off? What Do You Do to Make Up For the Lost Income?

When Friday came around I was informed to turn in all of my Board of Education property and just like that, I was out of a job. The first thing I did was panic. Being laid off is tramatic. I kept thinking "how am I going to make up for the lost income?" "What's going to happen to me and my family?" "How am I going to keep my house and car?" These questions kept playing back in my head over and over again. I went out that night and got drunk. For some reason the question playback in my head stopped.

The next day I was hung over and in shock. I got my self together and took a drive out to the forest preserve. That's where I go when I need to think. I knew I needed to come up with something soon or I'm going to loose everything. I needed a plan of action. Something that will help me keep my sanity. After careful thought I came up with my action plan.

1. Go back to the board of education central office and apply for every open teacher position available in the entire city.
2. Gather information on transitioning into another career or look for new and quick income sources.
3. Think about working for myself. Getting my own business and being my own boss.

I started with the first item in my plan. I went to the board of education central office and applied for 63 open teacher positions. Next, I got on the internet and started looking for other careers i could qualify for. While looking i found that I could do many different things but there were vary few openings. The next day I started looking on the internet for information about starting some kind of business. One problem with this is funds to start a business. I didn't have much. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. What about using my computer and my access to the internet to try and generate some kind of income to sustain me until I secure another teaching position. I started looking at internet businesses. I found a lot of information on that topic.

One thing that really got me interested was that you don"t need a lot of start up funds and there were hundreds of different money making things I could do. One thing i could do and make some quick cash was take surveys. I found out that there are companies out there that will pay you to take surveys. I jumped on that so fast. Man, these people pay some serious money if you answer a lot of questions on meny different and products. I couldn't believe it. I tried it and just like that i made a few bucks to take care of some bills. Now I'm hungry for more. I checked even further and found that with a little effort i could make this a business. Then I found some other income sources that made me feel like I can do this. After a month, I was making enough to keep my head above water. Now i'm seriously thinking about starting an internet business.

My action plan worked. I still haven heard from anyone wanting to hire a teacher. Looking for another career led me to the internet and now I feel like i can use this computer to maybe start a business. Life is good. I'm not worried anymore,I think I can do this.
