Understand Your Values Before Making A Career Change

I've been writing a website now for 5 years with the express intention that one day it would make me financially independent and by that I mean that I would be able to work on the website full time to provide sufficient income to keep me and my family safe from the debt collectors.....and have a little cash to spare.

Based on the growth that I had seen historically, working our the approximate revenue per 100 site visitors I was able to predict that I could quit the day job sometime towards the end of 2011. A great target and one that I thought was readily achievable.

I had spoken to many people in business about my venture and canvassed opinion about what it is like working at home and working for yourself. There were many diverse answers but also some common threads started to appear, and common enough for me to think about further investigation.

The three that came up the most were:

It's not easy working for yourself, in fact it's hard work and the pay checks aren't as regular.
How will you motivate yourself and not lie in bed all day?
How will you survive without talking to anyone all day?

On the face of it, it would be easy to just brush these points aside but I wanted to be sure that I was making the right decision. As a professional manager over the years I'd done many personality profiles and one that stuck in my mind was Myers Briggs and the fact that I'm an introvert - ISTJ to be precise. Being an introvert, maybe I don't need the comfort and security of others.

I decided that if I was going to do this for the rest of my life then it really was worth digging into further and it was whilst doing this research that I came across a values inventory test so I decided to take the plunge.

After paying my fee, I completed a questionnaire that took about 45 minutes and at the end of it I was presented with a debrief and a number of charts and graphs. I won't go into my own personal stuff other than to say it was probably one of the best things that I did because it really took me deep down into my core and helped me to examine what's driving me.

The principle behind the values inventory test is that is that there are many different values (about 145) and to give an overview these can be grouped into 7 discrete categories and collectively this is known as your world view. Research shows that people view the world in different ways and this data, presented as a graph, shows you how important each cluster is and therefore how much of your life you will devote to satisfying those values.

In addition, I also got a breakdown of my top 10 values. My top 3 were:

Independence
Financial Security
Ownership

This above anything else told me that setting up my own business was something that I just had to do - and now, ahead of schedule, I work at home and I am my own boss.

There is one caveat that I should mention. Your values can and do change as a result of your situation so you have to keep this in mind however it's unlikely that your values are being completely driven by your environment - it is mainly you (or me).

To Become a Driving Instructor

To become a driving instructor, you will need to complete a qualifying process designed to make sure that you have good knowledge of driving, the laws of the road and teaching skills.

The process to become a driving instructor is split into three parts as follows:

Part 1. Theory
Part 2. Advanced driving
Part 3. Instructional ability

So let's look at them one at a time

To Become a Driving Instructor, Part 1 The part one is the first of three tests you will need to take to become an approved Driving Instructor (ADI) The part 1 test is split into two parts; a multiple choice question paper and a hazard perception test.

Multiple Choice Question Paper The question paper (carried out on a pc) consists of 100 questions, which are split into four bands. Each band contains 25 questions, of which you must answer at least 20 correctly (80%) These bands are:

1. Road Procedure.
2. Traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians, mechanical knowledge.
3. Driving Test, disabilities, law.
4. Publications, instructional techniques.

Although you must achieve a score of at least 80% on each of the bands, your overall score must be at least 85%.

Hazard Perception Test The hazard perception part of the test, also carried out on a pc, tests your reaction time to hazards. You will see 14 video clips of various road conditions, which contain at least one developing hazard each. You will be required to click a mouse button each time you see a hazard and your reaction time will be converted into a score, the highest being 5 and the lowest being 0, obviously the highest score for the fastest reaction. *For a more detailed look at this, see the link below.

A good trainer will provide you with all of the material you will need to study for this test and should also provide you with some kind of study guide to help you get through the books in the easiest way possible. Make sure that the price of these books and materials are included in the price of your training, as often they could be added on as an extra once you have signed up to and paid for the course.

To Become a Driving Instructor, Part 2 The part two test is basically an advanced driving test. Firstly, you will have to pass a simple eyesight test. You will be required to read a standard size number plate from 27.5 metres (90 feet). This should be carried out wearing prescription glasses if needed. You will then be asked five questions regarding basic vehicle maintenance.

Your trainer will be able to give you advice on this subject. You will then be taken on a test route, which will take in all road conditions including town driving, rural roads, dual carriageways and, where possible, motorway driving. You will also be asked to carry out the following set exercises:


Controlled Stop (also referred to as 'emergency stop')
Turn in the Road (also referred to as 'three point turn')
Left Hand Reverse
Right Hand Reverse (both also referred to as 'reverse around a corner')
A Parking Manoeuvre. This can either be parallel parking or reverse bay parking.


This test will last for one hour and during the test you you will be allowed to commit up to six driving faults, no serious faults and no dangerous faults. *For a more detailed look at this, see the link below.

To Become a Driving Instructor, Part 3 This is the part where you are tested on your ability to teach. The part three test is divided into two halves, known as 'Phase One and Phase Two' For both phases, an examiner will play the role of a student. The student played will be at different levels of learning for each phase.

Phase One. For this phase, the examiner will play a student of very limited knowledge and experience and you will be asked to teach him a new subject that he hasn't covered previously.

Phase Two. For this phase the examiner will play a more experienced student, who is having problems with a subject previously taught. Your job will be to find out what is causing the problems and show him how to put things right. *For a more detailed look at this, see the link below.

Ok, so that's a quick insight into training to become a driving instructor, so what's the catch? Well, there are companies out there who just want to get their hands on your cash and aren't too worried about the level of training you receive.

As a rule of thumb, DON'T part with thousands of pounds just because the sales pitch looks great, take time to find out exactly what you are getting for your money and just what the refund policy of the company is, in case you are not satisfied with your training.

The t Test - What The Heck Is It?

Many people studying statistics have real confusion with the t Test. It's not an easy concept to grasp. Here is the short description of the t Test that, hopefully, will clarify this statistical method.

The t test is a statistics test generally used to test whether means of populations are different. In the t test, a t value is calculated based upon the difference in the means and variances of the two populations. This t value is compared to a critical t value, which is based upon the required level of certainty (perhaps you need to be at least 95% certain of the outcome) and the degrees of freedom present in the test. If the t value is greater than the critical t value, it could be stated that, within the required degree of certainty, the 2 means are different.

The t value is generally calculated as follows:

t value = (Difference between the group means) / (Variability of the groups)

To sum up the above calculation, if the groups have a high degree of variance (noise), it is harder to tell whether there really is a difference in the means. The higher amount of variance that exists in the groups, the higher will be the denominator of the above fraction. The higher the denominator, the lower will be the t value. The lower the t value, the less likely that the two means are different. The means are considered different if the t value is greater than the critical t value. It is the t value that is compared with a critical t value to determine within a required degree of certainty whether there really is a difference in the means.

The t value's numerator (Difference between group means) and the denominator (variability of the groups) are calculated in difference ways depending on what type of t test is being run.

The t test has a number of variations but the t test is most commonly used to test whether the means of two populations that are normally distributed are equal. This type of t test is referred to as a Student's t test, or sometimes just the student t test. Drawing samples from different populations in this fashion is referred to as an unpaired t test.

A one-sample t test uses one sample drawn from a single population to test whether the population's mean is equal to a specified value. In other words, the one-sample t test is used to test the Null Hypothesis that the population's mean is equal to that specified value. All other types of t tests are variations of the two sample t test.

A paired t test or paired difference t test is use to test whether "before" and "after" measurements taken of a single object are the same. The Null Hypothesis being tested states that there is no difference between "before" and "after." Specifically, the Null Hypothesis states that "after" values - "before" value = 0.

The Student's t test works well if sample sizes are equal even when the populations being compared have unequal variances. A similar t test called Welch's t test works fine for unequal sample sizes taken from populations with unequal variances.

The two populations from which sample are drawn should be normally distributed.

The t test (specifically, the Student's t test) is equivalent to a one-way ANOVA test when it is being applied to test the equality of means of two normally distributed populations.

A one-sample t test uses one sample drawn from a single population to test whether the population's mean is equal to a specified value. In other words, the one-sample t test is used to test the Null Hypothesis that the population's mean is equal to that specified value.

A two-sample t test is used to test whether two separate normally-distributed populations have the same mean. The Student's t test works well if sample sizes are equal but the populations have different variances. Welch's t test works well for unequal sample sizes drawn from populations of unequal variance.

Top 5 Ways to Save Money on Your Next Postcard Campaign

I get asked this question all the time! How can I run a postcard marketing campaign on a shoestring budget?

Okay, let's get strait to the point. You must spend money to make money! It's an old saying but it's true. However, I can show you how to save money on your postcard campaign.

1. Print You Own Cards! If you're just starting out, printing your own postcards is not a bad idea. I have personally responded to postcards that caught my attention that I could clearly see were made at home. Now, the size was smaller than standard. They were not 4x6, I believe they were 3x4.5 in size. But, the message caught my eye, and I went to the site.

2. Shop around for printing! If you don't have time to print your own, go to at least 5 printers and get price quotes. I have been told by customers, that they have major printing companies who will print cards for.02 a piece. Now, they're not fancy, but with a good message and a good list, they do the trick. So be diligent in shopping printing quotes.

3. Buy In Bulk If Possible! Once you have found a sales message that works and generates the responses you need, buy the postcards in bulk! Buy buying 2500 and up, you can get some killer deals on printing. But, once again, only after you know that your list broker is providing you solid names and your sales message is a winner.

4. Test, Test, Test! This is important! Test the names you are getting. Test different sales messages to find the best. Sending out 2500 untested postcards is a massive waste of money. You don't want to be stuck with 2500 postcards with a message that doesn't drive traffic the way it should. I recommend testing batches of 500 to see the response.

5. Bulk Mailing Permits! Get a bulk mailing permit if possible. You can get a postcard stamp for .28 that will handle a postcard no larger than 4x6. But, with a bulk mailing permit, you will pay less than that, and the pennies will add up. Also, look into other mailing venues, such as Money Mailer, etc.. Where I live in Dallas, you can send out 10,000 postcards in an envelope with other cards for 498.00. So, if you are have a product to market to a broad audience this might be a good idea.
