Overcome Your Fear Of Making A Video For The Internet!
We are all afraid to get in front of the camera and make that first video whether it is for the internet or something else! I know what goes through my mind. Maybe I need a hair cut? Well if you need a haircut, get a haircut. The funny part is most people watching probably will not even notice if you get a haircut. Here is some of the things I might worry about and what you can do about it. Now that we have our hair cut we can get back to making the video. When I get a haircut I have to give the barber my glasses. You know when I get back in front of the camera maybe the barber got something on my glasses. Boy can dirty glasses be a distraction. If your glasses are dirty I am sure the viewers will not care, but if it bothers you clean your glasses. Sometimes I get in front of the camera and I completely forget what the video was supposed to be about. That is not a problem. You can always start over. Oh, you can delete the one you messed up and no-one has to see it! How about the way you look? What are people going to think of me? Take me for example, I am not so young, not so good looking, lacking some hair, maybe overweight, and wear glasses. I am a Baby Boomer and who makes up a big part of the population right now? What do most Baby Boomers look like? I fit right in. Do not let what you look like stop you. How about what I am wearing? Maybe it is the wrong shirt or blouse? Go change it if you are not comfortable with the way it looks. You are more critical about yourself than others will be. Ok, I got my hair cut, I got past the fact that I am not some hunk or a model; I changed into something I think will look ok, what else could go wrong. Most of the time when I shoot one of these videos I have to do it over and over to get it good enough to put it on the internet. Thank God for the video editing programs! Sometimes I have to take parts of different videos and put them together. Sometimes when I know I made mistake I just pause for a few moments, take a deep breath, and repeat what I was trying to say again. I can always cut the mistake out. Sometimes I have to pause more than once. I had to stop once and go back and make the video the next day. There other things that could go wrong. I forgot to turn off my cell phone and it started ringing. I shoot most of the videos at home and sometimes the TV or Radio is too loud. I could go on with a lot more of things that could happen. Remember you can always start over. You can erase all the stuff you don't want people to see! I practiced a lot before I put my first video with me in it on the internet. I shot and erased a lot of videos before I was brave enough to up load one with me in it. I tried to use a script and for me it sounded phony. A script might work for you. I am still not the best at making videos for the internet, but the more videos I make the more comfortable I am getting. It was a big fear for me because of my perception of the way I look and what people will think of me. I still worry about that, but the more videos I make the easier it is. My suggestion to you is just start making videos even if you erase them before anyone sees them. Keep it up until you kind of like one and put it on the internet.
