Time Management and Goal Setting - Working From Home

You get out of bed, have some breakfast and jump in the car for a lengthy commute to work. You arrive for 9am having spend an hour and a half in traffic. You grab a coffee and head for the desk. Before you realize it is time for a break, then lunch, then another break and then time for the commute back home. Day in and day out you perform this ritual. Are you satisfied? Are you hungry for more? If not it's time for a change!

By the time it takes to drive to work you could have had the most productive two hours in your day. When working from home you have to make each hour count. You don't get paid by the hour working for yourself so you need to make sure you are getting stuff done and moving your home based business forward. Even though you can avoid the commute and save precious time in the car, you still have to make use of your time or you won't even get paid!

Here are a few tips to get you on the right track to a successful home based business:

Make a list of things you need to do before you turn on the computer. It is easy to get distracted by emails and junk if the first thing you do is check your emails. Don't do this first thing. Make the first thing you do the most productive thing you can do. Only check your emails twice a day as this is an unnecessary time waster.

Avoid social networking sites too as these can be a huge distraction. If you have a messenger service on your computer for chat, turn it off as your well-meaning friends can distract you for hours and you will lose precious time which could have been used building your business.

Make a list each day and work through it without getting distracted. Especially if you are working online it is very easy to get caught up in Google searches and reading new material.

Set yourself some goals in several different time frames. Make sure your activities today are in line with your long-term goals. Break them down into several component parts and make a 'timeline' showing your levels of progression. How will you know you are on track? You will slowly see evidence of your progression on your timeline.

Don't permit distractions. Just because you are working at home doesn't mean you are at every man and his dog's disposal. The phone, the doorbell, friends, relatives and family will all conspire to keep you from your work when working at home. It is up to you to say 'no'! Consider setting working hours and sticking to them. You need to be consistent and disciplined to get things done. Choose a quiet room to work in and make it known you don't want distractions. Take your business seriously and you will be rewarded for it. Treat it like a holiday and chances are it won't give you what you want from it.

Increase Your Productivity With Evernote

Whether you're writing an RFP response or studying for a certification test, you probably spend more time gathering the pieces of information you need than actually working. Getting all of your meeting notes together, hunting for quotes, and tracking down technical information takes at least as long as the work you need to do! Make this a group project and it all gets more complicated. Sharing information and collaborating on the production of a document is even more difficult without the proper tools. The Evernote application is the antidote to clutter and is available on your computer, tablet, and smartphone. I turned to Evernote over a year ago to organize my work notes, collaborate with others, capture visual and audio references, and capture handwritten notes as text. My desk full of dog-eared, coffee stained notebooks has turned into a searchable database that is available on almost any device with internet access and goes with me everywhere.

I make a notebook for every project (or example: RFP response). I then add information to that notebook, using information from the web, photographs, PDF documents, hand written notes, typed notes, word and excel files, and audio. I tag this information within the notebook itself with descriptive tags like "final quote", "timeline", or "architecture." Then I add data from more sources to the notebook. A snippet of a web page, an email, a scanned receipt or even a business card turns into fully searchable text. Evernote has OCR capability and will recognize text in any source including business cards and photographs. If I am in a meeting taking notes I usually combine text, recorded audio (up to 90 minutes) and a whiteboard snapshot all in a single note. Finding your notes later is easy and fast. I can search with a keyword or I can organize my notes geographically using the map view.

The application itself is great and gets even better when you explore some of the other features it offers. I like the Evernote trunk and open it when I need a tool or an idea to enhance a project, turn voice notes to text, or make note taking easier. There are literally hundreds of other tools and applications in the trunk that you can use to enhance your Evernote experience. Looking through the trunk is s great way to find just the right tool..... an electronic pen that saves everything in Evernote, a tiny scanner, or even other smartphone apps that directly integrate into Evernote. The trunk is also filled with free notebooks to get you started in your Evernote journey. I have used this app for over a year and never found a flaw or missed feature. If you find one, let me know!

How to Find Registration Free Online Jobs

When you search for how to find registration free online jobs on the internet, you may find it difficult to find good opportunities. This can be attributed to the fact that the internet has an abundance of information about earning money from home. With this overload of information you could easily get confused or overwhelmed which means you will struggle to find legitimate, honest online jobs that are registration free.

However, there is also an abundance of people globally that are searching the internet looking for people with specific skills like programmers, writers, graphic and web designers, marketing specialists or people with knowledge about SEO, to name a couple. You have the opportunity to earn a decent income online if you have a skill that is in demand online, and many of them require no registration.

The best thing about this type of freelance work is that there is no cost to you to start doing this. Yes, that is correct; it costs nothing to register free for these online jobs. All you need is expertise in a specific field and be prepared to do work for other people.

Because this online job is done from your home, it presents the perfect opportunity for many different types of professionals like skilled workers without jobs, students, part time workers, stay-at-home parents as well as provides an opening for IT organisations to grow their businesses without incurring full-time staff related expenses.

But how do you find these registration free online jobs? You need to look for the people that are in need of your services. You can start by setting up a website for yourself and advertising your skills and services on the internet. Another possible option is to become a member of various sites that connect freelancers and the companies or individuals seeking their service. Sites like Elance and Craigslist are a good place to start. The great thing about these sites is that there are thousands of jobs to choose from and with some you have the option to bid on them. Additionally many of these jobs can be done from the comfort of your own home.

To get online jobs from these sites is like winning an auction. Companies or people put their jobs up and then you make an offer to them to provide the service. The buyers will select freelancers based on completion times and price as well as your experience. Once you have completed the online job, you will get feedback from the buyer about the service that you completed. The feedback can be very useful as a future reference and this allows you to build on online reputation of the type of work that you perform. This in turn will give you a better chance of successful bidding on other jobs.

IF you are just starting out with your online job search, you might want to offer your services for a lower cost initially until you can get a couple of feedback references of previous jobs that you have completed. This will give you the best chance of winning some bids as a freelance service provider. Once you have a couple under your belt, you can begin to charge market related rates.

The great thing about this business model is that you can earn a lot of money from these registration free online jobs. You income will depend largely on the type of work, the timeline to complete the job and the skill level required for the work. This means that if you are highly skilled in your field, you could earn a very good online income from these sites. The types of projects that pay highly usually include programming, Search Engine Optimisation, marketing or web design, some paying over $5000 for a single project. At the same time, you could earn a decent income doing other work like article writing, resumes, blogging or copywriting.

Organization - Why It's Key to the Success of Your Business

Great organization can help you save heaps of time and money. Poor organization will pour endless amounts of money and time down the drain.

Organization is the art and science of sorting your tasks, files and workspace in a way that's the most optimal for productivity.

How can you stay organized, save time and increase productivity? Here are a few tips.

=> Break Down Your Tasks by Month, Week and Day

Are you making progress on your projects? It's easy to lose sight of success or failure when you don't have a proper timeline to measure yourself against.

At the beginning of every month, make a timeline of what you want to accomplish this month. At the beginning of each week, break your tasks and goals down into more minute detail.

Finally, on a daily basis, write out the specific tasks you intend to achieve for the day. Write everything down, even the little things like "buy pencils" or "write Sally a thank you note."

This will help you stay on track and spend less time on things that aren't actually essential, like sorting your email or checking your stats.

=> Use Tools and systems that Help You Stay Organized

There are various tools and systems that can help you stay organized in various areas of your life.

A great RSS reader can help you stay on top of the blogs and newspapers you enjoy reading, all in one place. Rather than spending time browsing all these blogs at different times, you can access them all in one place.

A good piece of project management software can help you stay in touch with other people on your projects and make sure everyone is on track.

Following a task management system of your choice can also drastically cut down your stress. For example, David Allen's "Getting Things Done" system focuses on emptying everything that's on your plate into physical reminders.

This takes away the mental stress of trying to keep track of everything that you need to do and frees up a lot of bandwidth.

=> Physical Organization

Organizing your physical space can also have a big impact on your productivity.

Organize your various files into different folders. Make the folders you actually use easily accessible and file everything else away as reference material.

So many people have files all over the place that they haven't actually used in the last 3 months. Generally there really are just a few files you use on a regular basis, the rest are used sporadically.

Also keep a system of date-specific files. For example, if you're going to need a file 2 weeks from now, file that file in the file for 2 weeks from now. If you have a file for every week with date-essential files, that will take up 52 files - About one file cabinet drawer size.

These are just a few tips to help you get started. Once you've tried out a few different systems, try coming up with your own systems on what helps you stay organized and motivated.

Setting Goals The Correct Way For Your 2011 Marketing Campaigns

At the start of any project you need to sit yourself down to plan your attack. You need to set yourself a timetable with goals to hit by your specified dates. I'm sure everyone would write a checklist but without a timeline to work to things can easily be pushed to the side or even slip away - You need to be right on top of it every step of the way.

Now these are a few pointers you should in my opinion consider when creating your timeline..

Specifics - As above I'm sure everyone will write a checklist. Your checklist will be your goals you are wanting to achieve but each should be split down into 3 questions to yourself...

What are you going to do
Why are you doing this
How are you going to do this

Don't hold back on being really specific - you will identify success a lot greater when it does happen. Let me give you an example...

I will create 30 posts on my blog each 250-500 words long about weight loss by 1st March 2011.
In my example I stated the number, length, topic and deadline which is what I mean by being really specific. I will explain a bit further below but note this goal is also realistic, possible, measurable and timely.

Realistic - You have to consider if your goals are realistic. Maybe one of your goals is to get 4,000 subscribers to your newsletters, which is possible although can you achieve this within 2-3 weeks? Probably not. So keep your goals realistic and be honest to yourself and business otherwise you risk disappointment which could knock your drive to succeed.

Possible - So are the goals you have set possible? Are they at all limited by your knowledge and or resources? I would suggest you set yourself a challenge with the aim to push yourself to the limit but also noting to keep them within reach! You want benifit from success and will feel a real sense of achievement when you do complete each stage but with this there is a slim risk (if you are not realistic) that you do run over time and lose hope/momentum.

So you have created a website and want a 20% conversion rate from the outset.

Whilst this conversion rate is possible... eventually it is highly unlikely to happen straight away - therefore a more possible/realistic rate from the outset would be say 5%.

Measurable - It is essential to measure your goals otherwise how do you manage your progress? It would be a struggle to have a clear statistic if you do not track/measure your progress. Timeline / Progress chart or just a back to basics checklist would help.

Looking at conversion rates using a web statistics tool like Google Analytics, this will track vital statistics i.e. where your converting traffic is coming from.

Note you could be driving 500-1000 visitors to your site daily but if no one is buying the visitor rate is meaningless so my message here is do not get caught up tracking or moving the wrong target.

Timely - So what deadline have you set for your goals and sub-goals? Next 3 months, 3rd quarter, next year? Try setting a specific date rather than a general otherwise again there is a high risk they could slip away.

Setting goals the correct way will aid you to achieve your objectives quicker. Setting the path straight for success. As you are busy creating your business naturally other ideas will come to mind which will be added to the master plan so check progress and adapt accordingly. The majority of the time I have found I over-achieve by beating a deadline and this falls under the 'Possible' category,, push yourself but maintain a realistic date. I get a real confidence boost when this happens.

Wishing you all the best for 2011

5 Qualities You Must Have to Be an Online Freelancer

You must have already decided to become an online freelancer if you are reading this. There is a good deal of opportunity in that, and you are doing well to take it seriously. However, at the same time, you should realize that you need to have a few qualities if you really want to shine here. Here are the traits that you absolutely cannot do without.

Timeliness

You need to be time-conscious. Every job needs to be done according to a fixed timeline. These deadlines are set when you bid for the job. You have the liberty to select your deadlines, but once you have selected it, you should make sure that you abide by it. Remember that every task you take up is part of a business, and your punctuality plays a big role in its success. So, if you want to last as an online freelancer, it is important that you can stick to your commitment of your timeliness and don't jeopardize your employer's business prospects.

Great Communication

When you are working online, you communicate only through email or instant messengers. Apart from that, the client does not know you. Hence, you have to ensure constant communication. Even if there is nothing to say on a particular day of the assignment, you should drop in an email so that the client is reassured you are working. You should make yourself visible on chat (if you aren't available already). That little green dot is highly reassuring to people who have hired you from another part of the world-they understand you are working and accessible when they need you.

An Eye for Perfection

Another important trait that you must have is that you should strive for perfection. Nobody can be perfect, but you should make every attempt to be error-free in your work. If you don't understand something about the project brief, go ahead and ask questions. That makes for great communication as well as helps you be better in the job you have taken up.

Providing More than the Money's Worth

This is a fine trait to have-you should always help your client as much as possible. If they have asked for something, and you feel there is something more you can do without putting in too much effort, then go ahead and ask if you can do it. Don't worry about getting paid for walking the extra mile. You are going to get enough brownie points in doing that, in the form of excellent reviews that boost your future prospects on the jobsite, and some clients also give monetary bonuses.

A Will to Learn

You always need to keep learning. A freelancer's education is never complete. Technology is changing rapidly; that's one thing you have to keep abreast of. You may be used to a particular kind of system, but be open to ideas. New systems are getting developed around you all the time. People who do the best in online freelancer jobs are the ones that are always ahead of the pack.

Starting A Home Business - The Keys To Finally Breaking Free From Your 9-5 Job

If you have been thinking about starting a home business but aren't sure where to start or even when to start, there really is no better time than today to get moving. Starting your own online home based business won't make you rich overnight, but with the right plan and the right guidance from someone who's already done it, you can definitely make starting your own home business and quitting your job a reality.

In order to make this all a reality, you have to start somewhere, and below I have outlined the five things I wish I'd have known when I started my online business, as they would have significantly helped me to get more results in much less time:

#1 - Have a plan

You absolutely have to have a plan for what you will do, how you will do it, and when you plan on earning enough money to be able to quit your current job. Write down your goals and develop a daily plan-of-action for making them happen in the long-run.

#2 - Give yourself lots of time

You will need to give yourself lots of time to achieve success with your online home based business, so don't expect to be able to quit your current job in the near future, instead give yourself a timeline like one year for you to build your business to the point where you can do whatever you want.

#3 - Move in the right direction daily

The key to reaching goals is to move towards them consistently, so whether you have 5 hours or 5 minutes to work on building your business everyday, be sure to do something daily that helps get you closer to reaching your online business goals.

#4 - Use motivational tools to stay on track

Be sure to reward yourself for reaching your short-term goals, so when you make your first sale, when you finish writing your first ebook, be sure to reward yourself for making those great steps towards achieving your business goals.

#5 - Never give up

The biggest reason people fail is because they give up too quickly. As mentioned earlier, you should give yourself lots of time to reach your online business goals, and the reason for this is because it really does take lots of time for big success. Be sure to make a deal with yourself that you will keep going no matter how long it takes, because the real key to success is to never quit.

Tips For Outsourcing

The numerous steps, processes and landmines that make up the whole of outsourcing can be very daunting for someone who is new to them. However, if no steps are missed and no processes ignored, you will avoid most of the landmines and come out having had a very positive and rewarding experience.

The first and perhaps most important step is project planning. Know what you want, how you want it, and when you want it. Make sure you can describe these in detail before you try posting a job online. Remember, if you can't explain it to yourself, you can't explain it to anyone else, so be clear about your needs up front.

Choose a freelance website that offers the features and programs you want and fees you can live with. Open an account, set up your profile, and get your finances figured out (will you use escrow? how will you add money to your account?). Using the website's guidelines, post your job with a detailed description, skills required, timeline, etc. Give providers what they need to bid on your project accurately.

Once you've hired a freelancer, put together detailed management tools, and involve your provider in the creation of them. Estimate the time and expenses required for each task, schedule milestones, and prepare to review your provider's progress on a regular basis. Keep records of your experiences, so that you can reference them later for new projects and so that you can learn from past mistakes.

The quality of your outsourcing experience is in your hands. Be thoughtful, honest, and dedicated to the best-possible end result. Your efforts will not go unrewarded.
