How Much Does it Cost to Start a Home-Based Travel Agency

Starting a business can be expensive. Buying a franchise, for example, can cost well over $100,000.

So what do you think it would cost to set up your very own home-based travel marketing business? A lot, right?

How does nothing sound?

Sure you can spend thousands of dollars to sign up with an agency that will offer you GDS training and marketing support and a lot of other bells and whistles.

And that may be absolutely the right choice for you. If so, there are hundreds of reputable agencies to choose from.

They advertise aggressively on the Internet, charge a pretty penny, and seldom offer any sort of money-back guarantee.

But it is still possible to get started selling travel as a home-based outside agent for absolutely nothing. Even as a rank beginner. (Of course, experienced agents, with a track record or, better yet, a following should have no trouble getting an agency to take them on with no upfront cost.)

Oh, all right. It'll probably cost you something. Some phone calls. Some gas. The cost of cleaning that suit to take a meeting.

The tradeoff is time. It can take time to smoke out a situation that lets you get into the travel industry with little or no upfront investment. And time, as some wise person once said, is money.

But it can be done. I know because I did it myself. When I made my first commissionable booking, I didn't even have a business card. Mind you, I don't encourage you to be that casual. I just want to make the point that there are many ways to accomplish essentially the same goal.

The important thing to remember is that no two people are alike and some people will feel far more comfortable paying a reasonable sign up fee to get started quickly.

Others will feel they need GDS (global distribution system) training. But many of these people don't know that it's possible to earn good money selling travel without ever going near a GDS.

Others will want to test the waters and keep their cash outlay to a minimum.

The decision is yours. But I think you can guess where I come down on the issue.

I believe it's better to learn how the business really works before you go out and start spending lots of money for things you don't really understand (like those GDS systems).

Once you have a good working knowledge of how to make money in this business, THEN you can start adding elements to your business -- IF it makes sense.

So do your homework. Don't fall for the first slick come-on you see on the 'Net.

Dig a little deeper. Look for so-called "host agencies" that charge no sign-up fees.

Or find a local agency that will take you on as an outside rep. Like I say, that can be a challenge, but it can be done.

Being a good travel agent is largely about doing good research, so this is an exercise that will pay dividends for years to come.

Fluffy Slippers and Trust

A Robert Walters survey has found that 47.5% of respondents find working from home or on the move to be their best strategy and were not looking to come back to the office anytime soon.

In travel the home consultant has been around for a long time and with groups like MTA, Travel Managers and Travel Counsellors expanding daily, it comes as no surprise that other industries want to get on the band wagon.

Technology certainly allows the freedom to move about and with office rent escalating there should be an emphasis from many companies to send people home. There are of course issues, ranging from managing absentee staff to fragmenting teams and giving up control from an office environment.

With all of that to consider, there is only one question management needs to ask itself regarding staff working from home and it relates to trust from both sides. Do they trust the staff to achieve the results that seem to be so much easier to measure in the office? Do the staff trust management to keep them informed and connected? A company's intimate working environment and team mentality depends to some extent on the relationship that CEOs and their executives have with the employees and this generally works better in an office set up.

So is this the new challenge, as we all head for the morning coffee in our pyjamas and fluffy slippers to do the emails at the breakfast table and then not get on the train and go to work at all?

Let me digress a moment and mention the people we all trust but who have no capacity to work from home.

For the 16th year in a row, nurses have retained their place at the top of the most trusted list, according to the Roy Morgan Image of Professionals survey. Along with pharmacists, doctors and dentists the top of the list is heavy with people you need to trust, sometimes with your life, sometimes with your teeth.

They all require office facilities and unless you are happy to have your teeth fixed on the lounge of the dentist in your street, they won't have an opportunity others have to escape the normal office environment.

So those of you with the flexible work conditions should consider the trust management has put in you and maybe get dressed and work in the home office you have set up but never ventured into.

As an aside, it's not a stretch to guess the bottom of the trust list and it includes TV reporters, newspaper journalists and opinion pollsters. Still further down, way below the sludge line, we have a couple of old favourites in the car salesman and the advertising executive who round out the bottom of the list and no doubt can never be trusted.

None of these people should be let out of the boss' sight but you have the opportunity to show how the future will look when trust is given.

Women As Travel Agents

I read an article once by Susan Spano of the LA Times about women as travel agents. She noted that (according to one study) 75% of all travel agents are women and pointed out what those of us on this side of the business (the home-based side) have known for a good long while: that the money can be very good.

Spano cited one home-based agent who grosses $3.5 million serving the Hollywood film community. Assuming an average 10% after the split (and if I were doing that kind of volume I'd insist on at least that!), that's $350,000 a year. Not too shabby.

She also mentioned a part-timer who took in $50,000 on a single booking by rounding up 270 friends and family members for a cruise. (Wow! What an email list!)

So far so good, but I was disappointed -- amazed is more like it -- when the article started listing reasons the profession is so top heavy with women. Here were some of the reasons cited by Spano's sources, who were all women and big names in the travel industry no less:

Travel agenting has traditionally been a low-paying profession. I guess they think women are dumb. Selling travel is considered "fun." I guess they think women are frivolous.

Becoming a travel agent is easy. I guess they think women aren't capable of hard work.

Married women have time on their hands. Yikes! Where have these people been

It made me angry. And I'm not even a woman!

Here, then, are what I consider some of the real reasons women are so prominent in the travel business and why so many of them are succeeding big time as home-based agents:

*** Women Are Great at Relationship Selling ***

When I was a sales training consultant, I had the privilege of working with some very fine sales teams around the country. I was constantly impressed by the way female reps would hang in there to make the sales relationship work and bring in that big sale, long after their male counterparts would give up, muttering about what a jerk the customer was. They did it through relationship selling, which has two parts: understanding what makes the customer tick and designing a sales presentation that matches the product's benefits with the customer's needs and wants.

Travel products, especially the upscale high-margin products you should be selling, are ideal for this kind of relationship-based sales approach. Remember, a plane seat may be a commodity but a great vacation is like a great relationship. It feeds the soul and enriches the person who takes it. Women, I truly believe, understand this on a gut level and that's what makes them such great sellers of the dream of travel.

*** Women Care About Their Customers ***

I'm not suggesting that men are callous, but us guys like to make the sale and move on. Women not only want to make the sale, but make the right sale. It goes along with what I was saying about matching the product to the customer. Customers respond to this, whether they are aware of it or not. And women are curious, truly curious, about whether the customer liked the trip. So they're better at follow-up and those of you who have studied what I have to say about that, know what that means!

*** Women Care About the Quality of Their Lives ***

Guys may be willing to commute three hours a day to go bang their head against the corporate ladder to get ahead in a company that will dump them ruthlessly at the first sign of an economic downturn. But women want more from life than that. They see becoming a home-based travel agent as a strategy that allows them to work in a comfortable, supportive environment (home), on their own terms, make good money, and still have time for the things that really matter in life.

*** Women Are Smart ***

Don't fool yourself. Women don't become home-based agents because it's easy to get started (which is true) or because they have time on their hands or because they're just too dumb to do anything else. They do it because they can do the math and they know that when you add up the money to be made AND the great perks (travel, free time, time with the kids, and on and on) that this is one of the best paid jobs out there.

Home-Based Travel Agent - Is the Term Obsolete?

The term "home-based travel agent" has been around for nearly 20 years now. But some people in the industry say it's time to toss it onto the dustbin of history. But does that really make sense? Or is this a tempest in a teapot?

When the phrase "home-based travel agent" first came into wide usage, in the early 1990s, it was use to refer to people who sold travel but who were not employees of accredited travel agencies.

Instead, they were outside sales reps for accredited travel agencies and they operated as independent contractors not employees, an important distinction. And, yes, almost all of them worked from home offices.

Today, many people using the same tactics are operating out of commercial premises. In fact, since it has become possible for so-called "home-based" agents to get their own IATA numbers (or the functional equivalent), many of these agents are now full-fledged agencies with their own string of sub-agents working as independent contractors.

Most of these operations have clerical employees and are too large to run from a spare room. The only major difference between this new breed of agency and the old fashioned kind is that they do not sell airline tickets, so they don't have to follow the burdensome rules the airlines impose.

Of course, many "home-based" agents, indeed the majority, are just that -- single individuals or couples who sell travel products like cruises and tours and operate from their homes.

So why ditch the term "home-based travel agent"?

Those who advocate that move suggest that the term is demeaning and undervalues the professionalism and in-depth knowledge of these agents. They suggest using terms like "independent agent" instead. Well, whatever floats your boat, I suppose.

Now in fairness, this conversation is taking place within the industry. This is about the egos of people who sell travel and has nothing to do with how travel agents, home-based, independent, or what have you present themselves to the public.

I have been teaching people to succeed as home-based travel agents for over 15 years now and I have never suggested that anyone refer to themselves as a "home-based travel agent."

Smart home-basers have always been using other terms on their business cards, their marketing materials, and in their sales presentations. Some popular ones are travel consultant, cruise specialist, or vacation expert. Others are more creative. "I make dream trips come true," says one (home-based) travel agent.

So as far as the public is concerned, this is a non-issue.

And who cares how we're labeled in the industry? There are home-based agents who earn more than $100,000 a year. Do you think the bank refuses to deposit their checks because they're "home-based"?

I like the term home-based and I think it has grown in respect over the years. I remember the days when you could buy a clever little machine to hook up to your phone that made people think you had a receptionist. I don't see that anymore.

Most home-based travel agents will tell you that people are envious to discover that they work from home and have the freedom to dictate their own schedule.

And it is precisely that freedom that is at the heart of the home-based travel agent phenomenon.

Whether you want to work full or part time, at home as a solo entrepreneur or in an office with a support staff running your own team of sub agents, it's entirely up to you.

Once people understand the many options that are available to them as "home-based" agents, they don't waste time concerning themselves with how the industry categorizes them.

They simply get out there, start selling travel, and make money.
