Is Now a Good Time to Start a Home Business?

Starting a Home Business in a Downward Economy

As a result of the current economic situation, many people are out of work or fearing they may be out of work and are now considering what other options may be out there for them. One alternative that may come to mind is whether this is a good time to start a home based business. Many people dream of working for themselves but the security of a job prevents many from taking the plunge. When that security is gone or at risk, it is a good time to consider other options. There can definitely be arguments either way, but this could be a great time to get a new business off the ground if you are motivated and prepared to make it a success.

One reason is that in tough economic times, small businesses have a benefit over large companies because they are able to adjust to economic conditions easier than large corporations. They can add services and products, change marketing techniques and cut back on expenses without having to go through the corporate red tape, thus slowing the implementation process.

If you are thinking about a home business but aren't sure what type of business might be right for you, make an inventory of your skills, interests, experience and expertise as well as a list of what you truly love to do. Using those two factors, you can begin to discover what type of businesses may fit with your qualifications and passions.

Here are some ideas of start-up businesses that can be started with little cost:

On-line store: As long as you can get a website built, you can sell products without having to invest in inventory. This is done by drop shipping items directly from the vendor. To start, pick a theme, whether it is children's clothes, candles, gift items, etc. You can then contact wholesalers who sell wholesale and see if they will drop ship items. You can then list them for sale on your website and when an order is placed, you collect the money from the customer, the vendor will ship the product, and you pay the vendor.

As long as you are able to negotiate a good wholesale price with the vendor and you have a reasonable mark-up on the item, you will make a profit with little overhead. The most difficult aspect of this type of business will be marketing the website and providing competitive prices.

Virtual Assistant: If you have previous experience as an executive or administrative assistant, there are many people looking to hire a support person on an as-needed basis. As the rate of small businesses increase, the need for outsourcing will increase, especially for those with administrative skills.

Sales Representative: There are a variety of businesses that have evolved as a result of a product invention. The business owners had the creativity and persistence to develop a product, however, many do not have the time or experience in getting the product to retailers. As a sales representative, you could create a portfolio of products to bring to retailers.

Home Staging Counselor: The real estate market is facing an extremely tough time. Homes are selling at prices well below levels from a year ago as well as staying on the market longer. Therefore, it is more important than ever for people to have their homes in selling condition to get the most money as well as a quick sale. A home stager can team up with a real estate agent or office to help their clients get their homes in top showing condition.

Your Business Reputation Could Be In The Trash

Bad information could be out there circulating on the Internet this very minute about your business and you may not even know it.

Small business owners have a lot to keep up with on the web these days, and most don't even realize that they need to. So, naturally, as Google and other local sites crawl other business listing type sites and aggregate content to make up their page on your business, it could be wrong. Actually, if your business information is listed incorrectly on any number of sites it doesn't take long for that incorrect information to propagate to other sites and snowball into something ugly, which is why small business reputation management is so important.

This wasn't a big deal a few years ago, but it is today. For example, I searched for a veterinarian in a small city next to my hometown just to see what kind of reviews I could find. Google Maps served up some pretty troubling results. There were a lot of bad reviews about this particular vet. Even worse, no one from the business had responded to the comments and when I called they didn't even know those existed!

What would a person searching for a vet think of these search results? Even one bad review is enough to send a potential customer straight to your competition if you haven't responded appropriately.

Fortunately, most sites like Google allow you to respond personally to any comments made about your listing as long as you've claimed your listing and are the business owner. Take an active role in your small business reputation management to protect the future of your business.

A USA Today article spoke about a chiropractor in Los Angeles who uses online review sites to bolster his business. In fact, he stated that about 80% of his new business is from people who read positive reviews about his business and book appointments with him as a result. All he had to do to get those positive reviews is to gently ask patients to give him a review on one of the popular review sites like Yelp or CitySearch.

You have to be careful how you approach customers when asking for a review. Be too forceful and they could write a negative review about you because they may feel harassed. One way to be more subtle is to print out positive reviews from the review sites, frame them and display them proudly at your reception desk, your waiting room, etc. If people see those, their more likely to want to add to that as well, however, a disgruntled customer may do the same. So, it's important to monitor reviews about your business and respond to them in a kind, caring way even though you may feel otherwise. This lets everyone know that you tried to work things out and you wish that disgruntled customer the best.

Getting positive reviews and managing negative reviews is imperative to keep your business in the limelight instead of the dog house. However, it's more than just review sites that create your online business presence. You should also be proactively managing your brand online as well. This entails having a great website that accurately describes your products and/or services, being listed on web properties such as Google Places, Yelp and countless others, producing a monthly email newsletter for your customers and countless others.

The size of your business doesn't matter. Don't think that only large corporations continuously build their brands through multiple channels. The Small Business Administration generally defines a small business as having fewer than 500 employees and less than $7 million in annual sales. A lot of businesses fall into that category and are 29.6 million strong according to Score.org. Regardless of the size of your business, you should take an active role in managing your small business reputation!

Business Starts in a Recession - Go Home If You Are Laid Off and Not Ready to Retire!

The Problem:

The news is dire for the U.S. economy. Social security is facing a shortfall this year because many people are being forced to take early retirement.

Shuttered out of their jobs in their early '60's, these folks want to work. They can't find jobs.

More people filed for social security--2.74 million-- in 2009 than ever before. They are being forced to accept reduced benefits because they filed before full retirement age.

An additional problem is also arising. Many folks who had planned for retirement are pushing back their retirement to work longer. This sector is operating on fear that their retirement savings won't last.

If you do not want to retire early or if you do not want to delay regular retirement, the picture is not as black as you might think.

The Solution:

According to USA Today, " a recession may be the best time to start a business. " Disney and Microsoft began during recessions.

Shake things up. Use your experience in a different way.

The 'different way' could be lucrative. It could provide lifestyle changes you've been wanting.

Here's what you do:

1. Your Homework. Google and Yahoo! are friends. You may be in your '60's but you can do online research.

2. Make a Choice. Use your homework as a platform, check references and study the competition. Make an educated decision.

3. Write a Business Plan. Make sure this plan identifies the business focus, marketing targets, revenue objectives and other details. Numerous online resources can help as before.

4. Get On With It. Do not allow yourself to suffer 'analysis paralysis.' Nothing will happen if you do not take action.

It is fine to make mistakes. Remember you are adjusting your thought processes to make this change with a positive attitude. Mistakes are part of the process. Learn from them.

5. Market. The internet is your best friend, yet again.

Online home business opportunities abound and are considered by most M.B.A. types as the new business frontier, teeming with potential.
Connect with a good coach and learn the skills to penetrate the market. While it won't happen over night, with reasonable time and effort, you will see results.

6. Build personal connections. Service your clientele with a quick response time and solutions.

While you may have to follow a budget when launching your business, there are benefits:

You can work from your home office so long as you have a computer available.
No more commuting expenses.
Your home office and related expenses may qualify for an income tax deduction.
Start up costs for home internet businesses are nominal.

You can start a business in this recession and win. You have the tools you need. Start using the tools in a different way.

You can build a recession proof business from home and build the lifestyle of your dreams! Don't be defeated by a lay-off or take early retirement if you don't want to.

You don't have to.

The Reality of Starting a Home Based Business

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Diving In

Many dream of starting their own business to gain flexibility with family and independence from the corporate structure and politics. Today, it also is a financial savings when not forking over a fortune to fill the gas tank, buy an expensive wardrobe and pay those high daycare expenses. However, before jumping headfirst into starting a business, it is important to take a reality check and answer a few questions - honestly.

Being your own boss takes a lot of discipline. Even though your goal may be to gain flexibility, it might not be a reality right off the bat. This is due to the number of hours required to get the business off the ground combined with the fact there may be insufficient income to outsource or bring on a staff. So ask yourself, Are you able and willing to put in the countless hours it takes to get a business off the ground?

Also, can you afford to lose your current salary and put out extra money for the initial start-ups costs? It could be one to three years before you to start make a positive return and months before you start making any income at all. Also, if you had health benefits in your current position, do you have another means of obtaining insurance on your own or are you covered by your spouse?

One solution is that you may consider working full or part time while you start your business. Once you begin bringing in regular income, you can cut back or leave your job.

Here's another question to ask yourself. Do you have a support network to help you get through the low times - because there will be many? This would include your immediate family and/or a group of other entrepreneurs that have experience walking this same path.

Before getting too deep into the start of your business, it is important to check with your insurance agent to see if you are covered under your homeowner's policy. It might exclude you having business traffic in your home. Another area to check is with your homeowners association, which may also exclude you operating a business out of your home. These two factors could end your decision to start a home based business before you invest any more time or money.

If you need guidance selecting or starting your business, you may want to check out these additional resources:

 myownbusiness.com
 sba.gov/smallbusinessplanner/index.html
 score.org

Working for oneself and having the ability to do it from home is a fabulous opportunity for the right person, but not everyone is cut out for it. The most important question to ask yourself is whether or not you truly LOVE doing your business idea. If you are doing it because you think it is just a good business idea but you do not love what you are doing, it will end up being a miserable endeavor because it will be all consuming and you may struggle to make it successful.

So if you are resistant to change, take heart and know that each of these tools are easy to use and will ultimately make your business more efficient and hopefully more effective.

Corporate Downsize Leads to Work at Home

More than 10 years ago I was the result of a Corporate downsize, something that is very common these days with the state of our economy. At that point in my life I decided to never be in that situation again, meaning someone else having control over my financial outcome. I began a search for the company that would allow me to work from home. A company that would pay me for the work I preformed and my results! I found many companies that sounded like they may be good for me except their pay plan was not for me! After 9 months of search and learning about home based businesses I found the one perfect for me. All I had to do was to make sure I believed in their products. One must be able to back the company product line before a business venture takes place. After using just a fraction of their more 300 products I knew the company for me.

There are many home business opportunities so you just have to find one that connects with you and your thoughts, beliefs and passions. If you are a chef then a company that deals with cooking or cooking utensils may be the connection for you. If you are an insurance sales rep then search for business with sales programs dealing with insurance. Do your research! Study the company's longevity, financial picture, the management team, there unique products, their start up cost, their practices and their market reputation. Understand the compensation plan so you know where the income comes from, don't get caught up in in the recruiter's "hype".

Don't ever go into to debt to start the home business that will get you out of debt! There are companies out there that have an affordable start up/ Do NOT go into debt!

Working a home business whether it is full time or part, to supplement and income, is a decision everyone should make. You know for the first time in history, the current generation is averaging a lower standard of living than their parents.

Average Family's Net Worth

Ages 35 to 45 is $700
Ages 45 to 55 is $2800

Is Bigger Better?

Tips to Create the a Bigger Feel to Your Business

With so many businesses using the internet as their primary interaction with clients and customers, many contemplate how they appear and come across to their audience. Do they look small? Or do they come across as a medium or large company? And what appeals to the majority of their clients? If it is looking bigger, how do they do that in an effective manner?

If a big company appearance is important for your business, there are ways to take your small business and give it more of a big company image. Your website is a great start. The internet is a great tool for smaller businesses as it allows them to level the playing field so to speak with larger businesses. Here are some tips:

Use terms such as "we" versus "I" in the content of the site.

Include a phone number and have a live person available at the other end of line. This can be accomplished by providing a number such as a cell phone that will always be staffed. Or there are many companies that can act answering your calls, which can range from messages to taking orders. Many are available on an "as needed" basis.

You can also make yourself look big by showcasing your ability to deal with large customers. Ask some of your larger clients, which have name recognition, to provide testimonials to place on your website.

Outsource or add staff to expand the skill levels that your company is able to offer. This will bring depth to your company. Build a team, with an attorney, accountant, bookkeeper, and administrative help. This could also be expanded to a web designer to keep your website current, updated and fresh.

Provide a business type environment to meet with current and potential customers. Many small, home-based businesses find themselves meeting for lunch or coffee at a restaurant, but what if a customer asks to meet at your office. If you have a home office, this may be challenging.

Find a local business center that will rent conference rooms by the hour.

Another alternative to rent an office on a month-to-month basis in a small business center. There are companies that rent out office space and even provide administrative and reception services. Not only does this provide you a professional environment to conduct your business, but it also provides a staff on a per use basis.

It is important to be careful of the fine line between looking big and being too big for your britches. If you set too high of expectations for your customers, it could break your company while adding unnecessary stress on you to keep up the appearance. By putting together a structure and resources, you can look big and build a strong company while meeting your customer's needs. Take time to weigh the pros and cons of each and make your decision accordingly.

Key Indicators You Have Outgrown Your Home Based Business

Many begin the dream of becoming an entrepreneur by running their business out of their home. Reason can range from saving on expenses, or they simply do not need a lot of space to run their business. For Jennifer Manriquez of the Bilingual Fun Co., she found working from home provided a perfect balance between family and career. "At the moment, the home-based setup is the right balance for me. With my young children's busy schedules and daily lives, the flexibility it provides me is definitely worthwhile."

The reality of a home based business owner is facing the day they outgrow their home office. Unfortunately for some, that day arrives much faster than expected. Therefore, it is important to remain sensitive to the signs that your home is no longer the place for an office. Have a plan in place to identify the warning signs so that you can be prepared.

Product based businesses can easily expand beyond the walls of a home. When the dining room table and/or family room have become your warehouse, this may be a sign you need a separate warehouse or possibly expand to a store front.

The flow of customers and vendors through your front door may also be an indication that an alternate location may be needed. The increased traffic may be an issue for your family, but many neighborhoods and homeowners associations do not permit this type of traffic. It can also be an issue with your business and/or homeowners insurance and the amount of liability coverage for which you are protected.

An outside office may be more conducive if you struggle separating yourself from your work. If you find you are sneaking into your office after dinner to catch up on a few things or you spend a few hours here and there on weekends working on projects. For some, it is easier to have a defined separation between work and home locations.

As your business grows, there may come a point that you need to add staff. A home-based business can pose many challenges if you need your employees to work in close proximity to yourself. As Jennifer Manriquez sees in her plans, "I envision more space for additional employees one day. I have found that I am more productive if I am able to delegate some of the tasks that are very time consuming. I would like to have an office space specifically for my own staff so that they have the resources, materials, and space for completing the necessary work". Again, your homeowner's policy may not cover liability exposures for your employee's, therefore; you will need to have a separate work location once you bring employees onboard.

When you get to the point of exploring possible locations, assess what type of an office you need. Look down the road for future needs to prevent frequent moves. Will you be adding staff within the next year or two? Will you need additional space for additional equipment as your business grows? If so, keep that in mind so you have a location for expansion, otherwise, you will incur additional costs and headaches in moving.

Consulting with a commercial real estate agent will provide you with the expertise to find a location to suit your needs and help negotiate the best cost per square foot. They will also help navigate the many contractual agreements to consider in a lease, such as, build-out expenses, utilities, security, maintenance, and rate increases. Successfully choosing your new location for your business will help your business become more successful.
