ADVANTAGES Of Working At Home:

Flexible Work Schedule - subject only to communication needs with people in different time zones, you can work just about when you want to, or when schedule permits.

Short Commute - from your bedroom to wherever your home workplace is going to be. And think of the reduction in commuting costs - you save money as well as time.

No Handicap or Travel Restrictions - working from home is ideal for someone who is disabled or partially disabled and who may have difficulty getting to and from work, or in the workplace. Also travel, required in many jobs, is never a factor, so someone like a single mom with children to care for, does not have to deal with that problem.

Tax Deduction For Use Of A Home Office - for many people who work at home, this can be a big one. You are allowed to deduct expenses for that portion of your home that you use for business. But be cautious, deduction for business use of the home can be a red flag for tax auditors. To make sure you are deducting only those expenses you are entitled to see IRS publication 587. You're The BOSS - you no longer work for an demanding insensitive (and sometimes stupid) individual. Now you're the big cheese, you make the decisions, you set the schedule. One of the most common answers I hear when I ask why did you leave your job is "I couldn't get along with my boss."

DISADVANTAGES OF WORKING AT HOME:

You're The BOSS - wait, you say "I thought that was an advantage?" Yes, but as one of my mentors, Michael Gerber, used to say "Be careful about going into business for yourself. You may go from working for a demanding insensitive and sometimes stupid boss, to find yourself working for a dithering idiot." And, when you begin to feel the pressure of cash flow, decision making, scheduling, and seeing all the hats you will have to wear as an entrepreneur, you may find this all too true.

Lack of Benefits - paid vacation, paid holidays, sick days, health insurance - all gone. You're on your own now and you suddenly realize just how much those benefits were worth.

Flexible Schedule - a flexible schedule can be both an advantage (as described above) or a disadvantage. When you control the schedule there is nothing to stop you from scheduling things that are not priorities. Let's take me for example; I started this Article right after lunch today. Worked fairly steady for about an hour and then decided to take a break and go to the store and pick up some stuff I needed (I could set my own schedule - right?). Came back, opened the mail and made the mistake of opening my emails. Of course you know what happened, and here I am at 7:45 in the evening just getting started on the Article again.

Distractions - Demands of Others - imagine you are a work at home mom, trying to finish a project for a demanding client who needs it in the AM. Your oldest child "Mom, there is someone at the door." Ten minutes later, your youngest child "Mom, Jimmy hit me." - Jimmy "But mom, she spilled juice on my game." Twenty minutes later, "Mom, I'm hungry." and so it goes until your husband comes home and says "what's for dinner."

Clutter - unless you are a master at space planning and organizing, and have a lot of space to store and file, you won't believe the amount of clutter a home business can generate. I said in a prior Article in this series, that I had six piles of paper on the floor of my home office connected with unfinished projects that I was unable (or unwilling) to put away. Guess what, they are still there.

Lack of Social Interaction (& support) - don't think you will miss inter-acting with co-workers every day? Unless you are a very anti-social person, you better think again. When you work from home almost all your communication with anyone other than your immediate family is on the computer and the telephone. You have to work at scheduling enough time to even have lunch with a friend - or client - on an occasional basis. Human beings are herd or pack animals, and it's hard being a lone wolf (or in our case hopefully eagles).

Record Keeping / Paperwork - I don't know very many people with a Home Business, that can afford a Bookkeeper, but guess what - the books have to be kept. And even if you can afford to use an off site bookkeeping service, there are still records to deal with. My suggestion - QuickBooks. I'd be lost without that program. It's quick and it's easy, but it's still bookkeeping.

There you have it. Five advantages, seven disadvantages. Hopefully for you, the advantages will outweigh the disadvantages.

Six Handy Tips For Work From Home Moms

Meals
Dishes like casseroles, curries, soups and spaghetti sauce can be prepared before you start work and cook while you're working. If you cook them on a low heat they don't need tending too often and when they do it's a great opportunity for a stretch. These dishes are also easy to make larger batches and freeze well for the times when you just don't have the time (or energy) to cook.

Office
Having a good work area where you can set up a laptop or computer in a central part of the house makes it easier to supervise children, cook meals etc. I have a desk next to my kitchen, files are all kept in the linen cupboard. My biggest challenge is keeping my desk from being a dumping ground!

Improving Concentration
If you work at a desk use a fit ball as a chair (your local physiotherapist or the better sport stores should be able to advise the right size for your height and sell you a good quality one). They're great for your posture, the constant movement while you work helps concentration (I even found I lost weight when I started using one!) and are a handy place to bounce upset young children to sooth them and make them laugh.

Motivation and Training
There are lots of sites on the internet with MP3 downloads available for training or motivation. With an MP3 Player you can listen while you do household chores, exercise or drive and still hear what's going on around you.

Remembering All Those Great Ideas
Do you ever find that although you have tonnes of great ideas during the day they seem to fly out the window the minute you go to jot them down? Instead you sit there staring at a blank page, wondering what happened to all those great ideas? Carry a Digital Recorder (your MP3 player or iPhone may also have a built in digital recorder). At the end of the day sit down and write or type up any ideas you had into a journal and add any memory jogs into your diary or calendar.

Keeping Track
Have a good diary or online calendar to keep track of family appointments and plan daily business goals. Use your digital recorder to note things to remember as they pop up.

Your Home Based Business Will Go Down the Tube Big Time If You Do This One Stupid Thing

One early Sunday morning my wife wanted to take advantage of a special sale at one of our local retail stores. Not being the type to want to fight the crowds at 8:30 AM, I decided to wait for her in the car and listen to the radio.

Right from the beginning I was captivated by an infomercial. A "doctor" that I never heard of was being "interviewed" by someone about his revolutionary product that was a combination of vitamins, minerals and his "special protein formula". For over half an hour he went on and on about the supposed benefits of his unique, soon to be patented, exceptional product.

Everyone who has ever listened to an infomercial knows what came next.

For the first one thousands callers only, they would get a "special deal" on the price and the shipping just because they were unfortunate enough in my opinion to be listening to this nonsense on an early Sunday morning. Does any of this sound familiar to you?

What do these promoters think we are----brain dead?

As the infomercials always say, "But wait, there is more".

After "doctor #1" finished his 30 minute pitch, I couldn't believe what happened next! Another infomercial started with "doctor #2". His pitch was similar to "doctor #1". This time amino acids and antioxidants along with his "special formula"----gosh, where have we heard that before----would bring your liver back to life, make your colon like new and give you more energy than a five year old at a Memorial Day picnic.

Give me a break!

I just had to write about this for you because a lot of home based business owners make what is, in my opinion, a decision that is not really in their own best interest. Like these infomercial pitches, many home based business owners may get people to buy their products once or twice, but after that its "hit the bricks" and go out to find new customers.

The fact is, building a long term business with repeat customers is just about impossible if you are only selling that "specially formulated" stuff. People lose interest real fast when they see that what they are buying really has no benefits.

Do you really think that this is smartest way to run a business?

We can all agree that it makes more sense to have a home based business that sells things that people need everyday, always buy and are familiar with, rather than trying to sell them something that is unique and special. Stop kidding yourself about how you're going to "make it big" with some "special secret formula product".

Obviously, you don't even want to try to change people's buying habits. Experience shows that there is a better way to build a home based business.
