If this were an isolated story it would not really be worth telling, but of course it isn't. Most dog owners are in a similar situation. I was once too. My dogs used to have to wait for me in the backyard while I went to work. They were lucky because I only ever worked part-time, but many people don't have that option. A friend of mine who not only goes to work but had to move to an apartment building which turned out to be less than pet-friendly, spent money she could ill afford at the time on daycare for her dog. She ended up moving to a townhouse with a yard. Easier on her wallet but perhaps not easier on her dog.

It is true that the dogs were not the primary reason why I decided to work for myself and from home; there were weightier considerations for that, but the fact that the daily guilt attack about leaving them for hours has disappeared is a great advantage of the way I work now.
