The History of the Home Party Businesses

Home party businesses have been a popular way of selling many different products for quite a few years now. Most people remember Tupperware, Home Interiors or Mary Kay parties in years past. Nowadays the home social gathering business is involved in products from cookware and candles to vitamins and lingerie as well as convenient food packages and mixes. The first home gathering businesses appeared to come about in the early 1930s when door to door salesmen figured out that actually demonstrating their wares in the homes of their customers made sales go up. Those customers-typically housewives at that time-began to invite their friends and have parties when the door to door salesman would come. And thus began the home party business.

This idea of home parties to hawk wares and sell products took off and began to take the place of door to door selling. Home shindigs were planned and salesmen began to offer hostess gifts for the ladies that would invite their friends and neighbors to their homes for the party. As the popularity of home social gatherings grew, the need for consultants was born and many women began to work these home party businesses. It was a great way to spend time with friends and make money for the family as well. This was during the 1940s when women working outside of the home did not happen very much overall.

Thus an entire business model was born and there are a myriad of companies based on this type of business model today. From household decor to vacuum cleaners and books as well as handbags and cookware, the home gathering businesses have been growing since the concept took hold way back then. Now people can get involved from hostessing to consulting to moving into full time company positions based on the at-home party business model. With an ever evolving world of products to choose from and the onset of the internet to boost sales as well, home shindigs as a business model are not going to go away anytime soon.

Very few people over the age of 25 or so do not remember their mothers or aunts or even themselves being invited to and going to a Tupperware or Home Interiors party. Children often tagged along and played with others while their mothers enjoyed tea and handled products, placing orders and scheduling their own parties. While the business has evolved and changed, the basic home party model remains the same.
