In the past few days we have discussed the state of the Internet marketing business. Let's just assume for the time being that I am right and that the big search engines will continue to slap the gurus when ever they attempt to automate the exploitation of what should be organic search. Under these conditions, traditional SEO efforts are simply not going to work.
I bought a book on SEO a month ago. It was a new publication. I read it completely through last weekend and, honestly, there is very little left in that book that holds true today. I really feel for the book companies and publishers. This can't be welcome news. I think this will tend to affect those who want to get into the Internet marketing business as well. How in the world does one ever get enough information into one's head fast enough to get started. My observation is that the business is changing almost faster than a person can read. By the time you order and receive that $197 course from Russ the Guru, that marketing process has probably gone obsolete.
I think that this is one reason that so many courses are bought and never used. I once ordered a course on "Traffic Secrets" a few years ago. It was a nicely packaged case loaded with CDs and course material. The problem was that the "on-ramp" was just too long. By the time I was one third of the way into the course, I was already getting emails from other gurus who were pointing out the search engine changes that made my stuff obsolete.
Getting started in Internet marketing today is a bit like jumping onto a treadmill that is already moving. You have to watch it for a few minutes to get the cadence, then when you are ready you hop on and immediately assume the pace. At the same time, you cannot take too much time off. If you go away to Hawaii for three weeks without your laptop, then expect some significant pressure to catch up when you return. But this is not to say that it is a difficult momentum to hold. I could keep it on cruise control with about 2 hours per day of concentrated work. We'll talk about what it takes to be organized enough to pull this off in another article.
What I really wanted to highlight today is that the new gold rush is approaching fast. With a mobile market potential out there of over 5 billion people, there is no excuse for anyone not to be able to earn a significant income online. It is easier today than it was last year. But it will require that you abandon some old habits and adopt some new ones. The world will continue to change whether you participate or not. Find your best source of proven and reliable information, then fully endorse it! You will never look back.
