Vacations - When I was an employee, I NEVER got to go on vacation. Mainly because I could not afford to go anywhere, and I did not have a vehicle reliable enough to drive me further than work. Self employment allows you to not only go on vacation when you want, but also the ability to get there and pay for lodging and other expenses.
Home - When you work for someone else, you are less likely to buy a home. Most jobs do not provide incomes which allow you to afford a home purchase. The jobs that do tend to be taken by middle-class families who increase their spending when they get wage increases. When you work from home, you get a better sense that the money is yours and you are more careful with it.
Credit - Your credit may be shot, and the only way to get out of the black hole we call F credit is to pay off charged off accounts and establish new credit lines. By working from home, you can get the money coming in to take care of past due credit situations and work towards triple-a credit.
Hunger - I have been hungry before. I don't mean that my stomach was grumbling before dinner time. I mean that there was no dinner time because I did not have any food. It's a horrible feeling when you do not know when your next meal is coming. By being self-employed, I was able to make sure that I never go hungry again.
Homeless - This is different from the home section, since this time you have no place to live, never mind one that you own. When I was homeless, I worked hard to pick myself up and get off the streets. I had no expenses, so becoming self-employed and saving my money was pretty easy.
Status - When you tell others that you work from home, they instantly wish that they were you. All of the reasons I already mentioned come flooding into their minds, and they want to work from home too. You essentially become a hero to the many who wish they were in your shoes.
Charity - Working from home enables you to give to charity. Not only do you have the money to give away, but you are less protective of it because you didn't spend hours away from home earning it. You are likely to look at your money objectively and know that you can, and how much you can give away to charity.
Church - I can't count the number of times I have gone to church and been embarrassed when the collection plate came around, and I had nothing to put in it. That really should not be a problem, and it doesn't have to be with self employment.
Taxes & Protection - if you decide to go big and start a corporation, you have various tax benefits on your side along with the protection you are missing as a sole proprietorship.
