Turn Your Candle Making Hobby Into a Business

With the economy as it currently stands, more people are looking for ways to earn an income. If you make candles as a hobby, you may have thought about turning your hobby into a business. For many people this has been a successful venture, so successful they've been able to use it as a sole source of income, for others however it's been a complete failure.

If you currently make your own candles then you know how expensive it can get at times. Imagine this cost being multiplied by the hundreds, or thousands even. If you don't take the time to shop around and compare prices for the best deals for your budget without sacrificing the quality of your candles you could end up wasting that much money.

If you already know how to make candles, and have an idea of what you are going to make, then your next step is to determine your costs. You already know the supplies you need so shop around, if you have suppliers close to you or in your area you can save a lot of money off of shipping. If not then, don't be afraid to order small sample sizes at first, there's nothing worse than buying 50lbs of wax only to have it go to waste because you did not like it.

Some things to keep track of:
* The cost of your wax (by pound) and how many ounces you use for each type of candle you sell.
* The cost of your wicks (purchased in bulk) - Take that price and divide it by the number of wicks you buy to get your per wick cost.
* The cost of your dye - Determine this cost the same way you do your wax
* The cost of fragrance - Determine this cost as you would your wicks. Divide the amount you use per batch (ounces) by the amount you buy (ounces or pounds)
* The cost of any containers used. - This includes freight charges if applicable
* The cost of labels (Both product and warning) - Divide the number of labels you order by the cost of each order
* Your time. - This is an important one many people forget to factor in, but YES the time you spend making your candles is worth something. - Take the amount of time it takes you to make a batch of candles and divide that by the number of candles you make in that batch.

If you ever find yourself in such a situation where you have a product you didn't like, or excess you no longer need remember you can always sell it on eBay, Craigslist, or any other such site!
