It wasn't until I made a decision to work from home that I found out people are so negative about it. At first, I couldn't figure it out. But over the course of time I've learned to ignore it and also understand why people are so negative about it.
The main reason is because of ignorance. From the time I was a child, everyone my family knew had "a job". I was told I had to have "a job". I was even told how to do well in high school and on standardized tests and to get into a good university to get "a good job". I was never told that I had an option of starting my own business that I could work from home and that I could make just as much money and have more control over my time. Most others reading this article probably had the same upbringing. Thus, at one time or another, you may have laughed at someone who said they were going to work from home.
Another reason is that people care about their friends and family and don't want to see them fail. Most people who talk negatively regarding our plans to start a home-based business really are well-meaning. It may not feel like that at the moment, but they do have our best interest at heart. They think we're setting ourselves up for failure and they're trying to help us avoid the heartbreak. So, they want to nip it in the bud before we even get our feet off the ground. These too, no matter how much they care about us, need to be ignored if we want to succeed.
A third common reason is jealousy. It really is true that when people see you geared and headed for success, they feel bad that they can't do it. Sometimes the solution to that is to encourage them to do something that will help them better themselves. When you make them feel good about themselves and give them something to strive for, they won't have time to be envious over your path to success. If you can't reason with them, ignore them too and keep working toward your goals.
It's sad that everyone around us can't share in the joy we have at the prospect of working from home, doing more of the things we love. But, it's the reality of the world we live in. Until things change, keep your positive attitude and ask those who are negative regarding your quest to keep it to themselves!
