As a virtual assistant you do the same thing as a secretary or administrative assistant would do except that you will do it out of your own home office. These days a lot of businesses are down sizing and don't want to hire a full time employee, by not hiring someone full time they increase their bottom line by not paying a salary or benefits.

As a VA you can work for many different companies and also for other business owners that work from home that rather spend their time on building a business then on their own bookkeeping.

The more specialized a Virtual Assistant becomes in certain fields the more businesses will hire them for certain parts of there business that they don't want to do or don't know how to do for example designing and maintaining a Website and is able to give support to the companies.

There are lots of opportunities for VA's and there are many things they can do like desktop publishing, proofreading, editing, bookkeeping, real estate support, legal support, just to mansion a few, but don't think you have to know all of the different things a VA can do, of course the more fields you can work in the greater you business can grow. The great thing about working for yourself is that you can take the time to learn new things and widen your range of knowledge and take on different tasks.

There are some great benefits of being a Virtual Assistant and the main one is probably to be able to work from home. This is actually a great thing for stay home moms to still stay home with their kids, few other great benefits are that you will have no more commute and save money on them high gas prices, no expensive wardrobe, meeting all kinds of new people, expand your business as much or as little as you like, deceit who you will work for, set your own hours and I am sure there are a lot more benefits.

There are a few Skills a VA should have like motivation, typing skills, computer knowledge, be able to use basic office equipment, customer service skills, good communication skills, word processing, be good at keeping records and be very detail oriented. A lot of times business owner are willing to train you in certain thing if you are not sure about them they may not pay you as much as they would pay someone that already has that knowledge.
