Although working from home may seem like the ideal solution to getting away from the daily commute to the office, there can also be many distractions for the home worker. There are lots of things that can stop us from working effectively, trying to concentrate on your work with the kids & pets running around is never going to be easy. There will also be the temptation maybe to do some overdue jobs around the house, spending too much time watching daytime TV, or on a sunny day to sit in the garden a bit too long. Of course there's nothing wrong with doing these things, but be sure it's at the right time so your business doesn't suffer.
If you've been used to the discipline of travelling to a place of work & getting into work mode when you arrive, then it might be more difficult to achieve this in your own home, but it is possible if you follow some simple rules.
A good idea is to try & work to set times, keeping to a routine will give structure to your day, making you more effective. If possible create a designated work space in your home, this might be a spare room, a summerhouse in the garden, a converted garage & always try to keep this area set up for work tasks only. For some it can be difficult to find available space in a smaller home so you might have to look for other alternatives, maybe go the library to do your work, or travel to a quiet park.
Many will miss the buzz of working in a busy office with other people, where as some will really enjoy the solitude of a home based office. If you find it too quiet then try listening to the radio or some quiet background music. Going away from your home to have your lunch in a busy cafe or bar can also give you a break from your own company. Everyone is different in the way they like to work, just try to find what is best for you.
The self discipline that we need doesn't always come easily for some of us, but it is important to keep to a routine to be successful in your business. Getting the balance of work time & family time right is the key to making the whole experience of working at home a pleasure. It is so important to keep the two separate, the temptation to work on late in to the night can be the curse of many a home worker.
Always remember the reasons why you started to work from home, you were probably looking for more flexibility in your day, as well as quality time with your family. Whatever you were hoping to achieve, always keep these priorities foremost in your mind, then your home based business will give you the freedom & pleasure you could only dream of when you used to make that daily commute to the office.
